Officer Scott Slagel
NA SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
Officer Scott Slagel dedicated 28 years to serving as a full-time officer with the Police Department in the Township of O’Hara. Throughout his career, he held roles as a patrol officer, sergeant, and eventually as a superintendent of police. Officer Slagel collaborated closely with the Fox Chapel School District, where he taught the DARE program to fifth graders, conducted investigations, planned and provided security at events, and worked with staff to address safety incidents and concerns.
What are you most looking forward to in your new role at North Allegheny?
It is hard for teachers to teach and students to learn if they don’t feel safe. I look forward to helping the staff and students feel safe and comfortable in their learning environment. I am excited to meet many new people in the district and get to know them individually. I want to learn about their academic achievements, sports accomplishments, and the interests that make them who they are. North Allegheny is one of the most recognizable districts in Western Pennsylvania known for its academics and athletics, I look forward to saying, “I work for NA!"
Beyond safety, how do you envision your role in supporting the overall well-being of students?
It is important for students to understand there are many more roles law enforcement officers have other than enforcing laws and providing security. Police Officers, on a daily basis, can be mentors, teachers, and counselors. My goal is to break the misconception that police are there only to catch wrongdoing and generate revenue with tickets and fines. Teaching about safety, drug abuse, or careers in law enforcement and providing time as a person who will listen or provide proper resources to students in need all lend to improving the well-being of students.
What is your favorite thing about Pittsburgh?
My favorite thing about Pittsburgh is how easy it is to enjoy city life, such as concerts or professional sports. Only a short ride later, you can be in a country setting enjoying outdoor activities.
What are some of your interests or hobbies outside of law enforcement?
Outside of law enforcement, I enjoy spending time with my family. Traveling to the beach is always fun. Most of the time, I can be found attending my three sons’ ice and deck hockey events.
