OFFICER Q&A: Officer Rich O'Neil

Q: What inspired you to become a police officer?
A: I worked security at a business in Pittsburgh, where my uncle, a police officer, also worked security. I learned a lot about people from him and admired how respected he was and how others spoke about him. It was at that moment that I realized I wanted to be just like him.
Q: What was your favorite class/subject when you were in school?
A: Gym class!
Q: What school did you attend? Who was your favorite teacher?
A: Brashear High School and any teacher who allowed me to play a sport were my favorites at that time.
Q: What was your favorite food to eat at school lunch?
A: Pizza.
Q: Did you play a sport or participate in extracurricular activities while in school?
A: I played basketball until 9th grade, and then I wanted a car, so I stopped and got a job. I never stopped playing non-school sports.
Q: What do you like to do for fun when you're not at work?
A: I lift weights and play softball in various locations across the country.
Q: Do you have any pets? If so, do they help you with your job?
A: Our dog just passed away, but another one is probably coming soon. We are just waiting for one to pick us!
Q: What's the most important thing you want kids to know about safety?
A: When you learn a safety tip, please practice it because it will help you the rest of your life.
Q: What's your favorite way to connect with students at CMS?
A: Every child is different, so I would say just keep talking. They will give me an opening, and I will go from there. I like to talk!
