ADVANCED PLACEMENT
-
The Advanced Placement Program provides students the opportunity to pursue college-level coursework while in high school. Students may receive advanced placement credit upon entering college for their score on a national AP exam administered in May. AP exams are scored on a 1-5 scale and many colleges and universities award recognition for scores of 3, 4, or 5. Students should check the details on how AP test scores are managed for each college/university using apstudent.collegeboard.org/creditandplacement
It is the responsibility of the student to send AP scores to their chosen school directly from the College Board. The AP exams are optional and students who choose to take an AP exam must register to do so and assume the related costs. AP courses are weighted (refer to page 11). If a student does not pass the AP course, then AP weight will not be factored into the QPA. Current AP courses taught at North Allegheny are listed below. Exams will be offered only for the courses listed. Refer to individual course descriptions for additional information.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HONORS AND AP
Pacing, amount of reading/work outside of school, amount/level of writing, more content/greater depth, discussion, participation, class culture
EXPECTATIONS
Learn information at a quicker rate, develop effective study skills, read extensively and do research at the college level, complete work independently, work in groups to study/process information, come to class prepared for discussion/work, manage time to accommodate activities and school work
THE AP EXAM
Each course has a corresponding exam that is administered in May. AP exams represent the culmination of AP courses and are an integral part of the program. It is the expectation that all students enrolled in AP courses in the North Allegheny School District will take the exam. There is a charge for the exam and is the responsibility of the family.
