Bus Driver and Mechanic Certification Requirements

• Complete a 20-hour Certified School Bus Training Course
  • 14 hours minimum classroom training
  • Six hours minimum behind-the-wheel training
• Pass a comprehensive physical by a school-appointed physician annually
  • Pass pre-employment and random drug testing screens
• Obtain a driving permit class B with the following endorsements:
  • P for passenger
  • S for school bus
  • Air brake restriction removal
• Achieve a score of at least 80% on four written exams:
  • School bus
  • Air brake
  • Passenger
  • General knowledge
• Pass a school bus driver's exam in the following areas:
  • Pre-trip inspection
  • Site skill maneuvers
  • Comprehensive road test
• Complete a recertification program every four years to maintain credentials in Pennsylvania
