• NORTH ALLEGHENY LIBRARY STANDARDS

  • 1. Research: Students will understand the functions and procedures of a library and other information providers, recognizing the terminologies associated with print and non-print media and the principles of organized information systems.

    2. Research: Students will use an automated library catalog and other bibliographic databases to identify, locate, and retrieve materials.

    (Correlates with PA Academic Standards for Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening 1.8 B—Locate information using appropriate sources and strategies.)

    3. Research: Students will use the research process to select and refine a topic for research; locate information using appropriate sources and strategies; analyze, synthsize, and evaluate the information; and present the main ideas from research.

    4. Research: Students will use problem-solving skills and higher-level thinking skills to develop information seeking strategies and evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of those strategies.

    5. Research: Students will practice ethical behavior in regard to the use of information resources and technology systems, information, and software.

    (Correlates with PA Academic Standards for Science and Technology 3.7 D—Identify the legal restrictions of computer users; PA Academic Standards for Civics and Government 5.2 A, F—Rights and responsibilities.)

    6. Technology: Students will demonstrate an understanding of the operations of technology systems and technology productivity tools.

    (Correlates with PA Academic Standards for Science and Technology 3.6 B—Knowledge of information technologies; 3.7 C—Basic computer operations and concepts; 3.7 D—Utilize computer software to solve specific problems; 3.7 E—Basic computer communication systems.)

    7. Technology: Students will use a variety of technologies to access, apply, and communicate appropriate information and to solve specific problems.

    8. Literacy: The student will identify and distinguish between various literary forms and genres and demonstrate knowledge of representative authors, illustrators, literary works, and styles.

    9. Literacy: Students will use and understand a variety of media, both print and non-print, and evaluate the quality of material.

    10. Literacy: Students will demonstrate independent learning skills and use resources for personal enjoyment and to meet information needs.
