Q: What inspired you to become a school bus driver?
A: My mom was a school bus driver. I didn’t know what I wanted to do after high school, and my mom’s friend Sissy, another NASD driver who just retired this past year, suggested I give it a try. I started driving in 1989, at 19 years old, and now have over 35 years of driving for North Allegheny.
Q: Can you share your journey to this profession?
A: I have met a lot of wonderful people through the years, and many have become like family. I’ve had many school bus work moms throughout the years, and they were all wonderful women who had a great impact on me. Starting out driving at such a young age did have its challenges, and some of the students wouldn’t take me seriously. But we grew together, and I’ve come to have a good understanding of the students. I really enjoy my job, and I especially like to transport the special needs students. The elementary students are fun, too!
Q: How do you prepare for your routes each day?
A: My route is the same every day. I clock in, do my Pre-Trip check of the bus, and go! It’s pretty simple.
Q: Can you share a memorable or rewarding experience with the students?
A: I once had an elementary student who was hesitant to speak to adults. However, over time, I helped the student feel comfortable, and they eventually began to talk with me.
Q: What safety measures do you take to ensure the students’ well-being?
A: Being aware of everything around and near the bus, the children, the road conditions, and the other drivers on the road.
Q: What connections have you made with families and students over the years?
A: This school year, when it snowed one afternoon, one of the fathers thanked me for getting the students home safely, and I could tell he truly appreciated it. That meant a lot to me. Also, first days of school, when a parent recognizes me for having driven their older children, and they are happy to see me.
Q: What is your favorite part of the job?
A: The students. With some, I can see that I’ve made a difference for them, and that is incredibly rewarding. Over the years, I have met so many terrific families, both parents and students, that will always hold a special place in my heart.
