DR. MARCIA MARTIN DIVERSITY EXPRESSION CONTEST

  • NA Empower invites North Allegheny students in grades K-12 to participate in the 2023-24 Dr. Marcia Martin Diversity Expression Contest with the theme “Share Our Similarities, Celebrate Our Differences.”

    The Dr. Marcia Martin Diversity Expression Contest is a fine arts competition for NASD students in grades K-12. 


    CONTEST CATEGORIES: 

    • Writing Category: Max 500 words (excluding a play)

      • Short Story, Poem, Personal Narrative, Dialogue, Play, Essay

    • Fine Arts Category: No larger than 12" x 18”

      • Musical Score, Sculpture, Painting, Poster, Drawings, Multi-Media Project, Photography

     

    Winners will be selected between across grade bans: 

    • Grades K-3

    • Grades 4-5

    • Grades 6-8

    • Grades 9-10

    • Grades 11-12

     

    SUBMISSION PERIOD

    Students are invited to submit their entries between March 4 and April 5. No submissions will be accepted after April 5, 2024.

    • One entry per student, per category, will be accepted. 

    • The entry should showcase and celebrate the theme “Share Our Similarities, Celebrate Our Differences.”

     

    2023-24 DR. MARCIA MARTIN DIVERSITY EXPRESSION CONTEST TIMELINE

    • February: Promote Contest Feb.23/Mar.1

    • March: Call for Entries

    • April: Entries will be Judged

    • May: Winners Announced

      • Winners will be recognized at the May 22, 2024, Board of School Directors Meeting

     

    ABOUT DR. MARCIA MARTIN

    A longtime educator, Dr. Martin was an assistant principal, reading specialist and teacher from 1973 to 1989. She became principal at Carson Middle School in 1989 and led the school for 15 years. During her career, Mrs. Martin served as the committee chairwoman of North Allegheny School District's Gender Equity and Diversity Training Program. She won the Gloria Fitzgibbons Award for gender equity work, the Outstanding Educator Award from the American Association of University Women, and the 1995 Don Eichhorn Award in recognition of outstanding middle school programs.

     

    ABOUT NA EMPOWER

    In 2021, North Allegheny School District introduced NA Empower, a committee of staff and students to help foster an inclusive environment where individuals feel supported and empowered. NA Empower expands upon the work of the NA Diversity Committee, which was founded in the early 1990s. 

    • The NA Empower Committee helps develop programs to help strengthen North Allegheny’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion; identify needs and concerns of the community, and support the development of culturally competent individuals. 

    • The work of NA Empower is focused on: 

      • Giving students and staff the power to impact more equitable policies, practices, curriculum, and instruction. 

      • Strengthening North Allegheny’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

      • Identifying the needs and concerns of the community.

      • Supporting the development of culturally competent individuals.
