The North Allegheny School District continues to embrace Diversity throughout the District’s culture. Back in 1992, the District set a purposeful focus to embrace Diversity by establishing five focal points for addressing Diversity:
- Commitment and support of the Diversity Initiative
- Strategic Planning
- Recruiting, hiring, and retaining minority candidates
- Building Partnerships
- Respecting Human Diversity Implementation Committee
On an ongoing basis, the District addresses each area in all aspects of the culture of the District. The strategies used require the thoughtful reflection of past successes and the exploration of more effective strategies to enhance the Diversity efforts. Various strategies are found embedded within the Strategic Plan; and furthermore, new strategies are continuing to be developed to help serve the diverse needs of every child of the District.
The District continues to strive to increase awareness in addressing Diversity while focusing on the objective of the North Allegheny School District Respecting Human Diversity Policy:
“Establish and continually promote an educational environment that is enriched by its Diversity . . . to foster mutual respect and affirmation for Diversity as it prepares all students to enter and participate in an increasingly global society.”
One of the venues for bringing together community members and District employees to collaborate in building an inclusive environment has been the Dr. Marcia Martin Unity/Diversity Committee. This Committee continues to meet to promote and foster the five goals established in 1992. The Committee reflects upon the current inclusive practices within the District and strives to look at other means of promoting inclusive practices within the North Allegheny School District.
