Tolerance & Acceptance at NASD
There are many outstanding activities that go on around the District throughout the year to promote Unity and Diversity. At every elementary school, special events are planned to celebrate cultures from around the world. The Diversity Puppets from Ingomar Middle School continue in their tradition of creativity and outreach. Our curriculum is infused with multi-cultural themes and age-appropriate references to the history of diversity and tolerance. There are many additional examples.
One of the highlights of the Committee's annual efforts is the annual all-District Diversity Expression Contest, which is the fine arts competition open to students in every grade. Each year, the winners of our contest participate in a special reception held in their honor at the Barnes & Noble Book Store in Cranberry, where they read or explain their work to a gathering of family and friends and enjoy some refreshments. Winners will be honored at a School Board meeting. All the winning submissions are then put together into a nicely displayed ‘traveling show' that moves from school building to school building throughout the spring.
The Committee hopes that students go away from the experience of having participated in this contest, and especially being honored as a winner, with the sense that their efforts were well-invested and that their interpretation of our theme was meaningful. Thanks go out to every teacher and principal who encourages student participation in this event.
