At the April 25, 2018 Regular School Board Meeting, the North Allegheny Board of School Directors voted to approve the establishment of one full-time School Resource Officer (SRO) at North Allegheny Senior High (NASH) and one full-time SRO at North Allegheny Intermediate (NAI). The District will proceed with determining specifics of the agreement with the Town of McCandless and the McCandless Police Department.

The District had been discussing the idea of adding SROs since early in the school year. The SROs will be responsible for providing training opportunities for staff and students, providing a leadership role to the school safety committee, conducting ongoing vulnerability analyses and suggest areas for improvement, building relationships with students and staff members, responding to critical incidents in the building, and other various tasks.

Both SROs will be uniformed Town of McCandless Police Officers and will be selected through an interview process that includes North Allegheny staff members, the McCandless Police Department, and possibly other individuals. Selected candidates will be trained on the necessary components as outlined by the National Association of School Resource Officers.

The SROs will be in place at both NASH and NAI at the beginning of the 2018-2019 school year; however, if the approval process through the Town of McCandless and the interview process move quickly, there is a chance that one or both of these individuals may start before the end of the current school year.
