    When do lessons begin?

Band Lessons begin on Tuesday September 3 for the 2019-20 school year. The band director places the students into small groups according to each student's schedule.

Is it too late for my child to begin lessons?

It is NEVER too late for your child to start lessons. While most students decide to participate in band at the end of the previous school year, we are more than happy to welcome students who decide to join band
in the fall. If you are new to the area in the fall, we would love to have your child participate. While we typically start band lessons in the fourth grade, fifth graders are more than welcome to start instruction on an instrument. It is also possible to start instruction in the middle of the year, but please contact Mr. Leasure to discuss scheduling lessons.

What is the cost for my child to participate?

There is no fee to participate in the band program. The only costs involved are renting/purchasing an instrument from a vendor, method book, and extra supplies (reeds, valve oil). For any instrument rental/purchase questions, please contact the recommended instrument vendors. You can find their contact info in the Links section.

Will the school provide an instrument?

You will need to rent or purchase an instrument for your child. You can rent or purchase an instrument from any of the recommended instrument vendors in the area. Checkout the Links section for their contact information. If you would like to purchase an instrument from somewhere else other than a recommended instrument vendor, please contact Mr. Leasure first.

Should my child take private lessons in addition to the school lessons?

While outside private instruction is not required to participate in our program, it is strongly encouraged. This provides the student with extra one-on-one instruction on their instrument. For suggestions on a private teacher in the area, please feel free to contact Mr. Leasure.

Will my child miss classroom instruction?

Students participating in the band program are pulled out of their classrooms on a very limited basis (once a week and rotating throughout the school day).  The large ensemble time is a set period during the week that does not conflict with classroom instruction.

Does my child get a grade for band?

Yes, each band student will receive a grade each for the first and second semesters of the school year on their report cards.  Students will be graded in the manner of the other Special Area classes (General Music, Art, PE, Library)

These are only a sampling of some of the common questions many parents have about the elementary band program. As always, please feel free to contact Mr. Leasure if you have a specific questions.
