    GRADING AND ATTENDANCE POLICY

The following grading policy applies to the NAI Concert Bands, Symphonic Bands, and Wind Ensembles

    1.    Our grading system is as follows as outlined by the North Allegheny School District

           90- 100 = A     80-89 = B        70-79 = B         60-69 = D        59 or below = E

    2.    All students are graded daily and can earn a maximum of 5 points per rehearsal with good class participation and mature behavior.  A student can lose from 1-5 points per rehearsal for forgetting their instrument, eating, drinking, or chewing gum during rehearsal, not having the necessary equipment for rehearsal such as reeds, drum sticks, mallets, mouth pieces, etc., disrupting rehearsal, and/or abusing the hall pass.

    3.    In order to receive an “A” in any of the band ensembles, you must have mature, appropriate ensemble behavior, good musical proficiency, and show musical improvements throughout each nine-week term.  With classes this large we will not tolerate inappropriate behavior in rehearsal.

    4.    You are required to attend all scheduled after-school dress rehearsals and performances.  After school rehearsals will be scheduled as needed and at least two weeks in advance.  Please see the attached calendar for a schedule of this year’s performance dates.

    5.    Missing any scheduled after school rehearsal will result in a grade deduction of one full letter.

    6.     The concerts are essentially your mid-term and final exams.  Missing a rehearsal or performance due to a conflict with another North Allegheny or non-North Allegheny event will not be an excused absence; if you have a conflict notify the director immediately so that a resolution can be reached.

    7.    Playing tests will be given throughout the school year at the discretion of the directors.

    8.    All members in the NAI Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble 2 are encouraged to attend the spring trip.

    Auditions and Chair Placement

All auditions for the NAI and NASH Concert Bands, Symphonic Bands, and Wind Ensembles will be done on an individual basis prior to scheduling in February or early March. All audition instructions and requirements will be available at the time of auditions. Every student must take a Concert Band, Symphonic Band, or Wind Ensemble audition, as this audition will serve as a playing test.

Auditions for the Jazz Ensembles will take place after school in early September. A rubric and audition instructions will be available at the time of auditions.
