• abc 's for 5B

ARRIVAL:  Please help your child ARRIVE at school on time as tardy arrivals interrupt everyone's learning!

ATTENDANCE: Regular ATTENDANCE is important because many fifth grade learning activities are group oriented and involve interaction with classmates. Therefore, recreating these activities at home would not provide the same learning experience.

BOOKS: Exposing your child to many BOOKS is a best practice.

BIRTHDAYS: Please remember that non-edible treats are recommended.  If you choose to send in edible treat, please send in nutrition labels for your child's birthday treat at least 2 days prior to birthday.  This is to ensure the safety of the students!

COMMUNICATION is an essential ingredient in our joint effort to support your child's education. Please contact me with any concerns, questions, ideas, etc. either via phone during school hours, email, or place a note in your child’s take home folder.
COMPUTERS: We visit the computer lab where the students are exposed to a variety of programs.  We also have two lab tops in our classroom!

CURRICULUM: Our CURRICULUM is based on the Pennsylvania State Standards, Benchmarks and Eligible Content for fifth grade. Our school district's web site is https://www.northallegheny.org/

CURRICULUM NIGHT: Please join me on curriculum night to discuss the exciting curriculum for 5th grade.

DIFFERENCES:  We will learn to accept the DIFFERENCES in others.
DISCIPLINE:   It is important that each child develops self-discipline and good work habits, resolves conflicts peacefully, and thinks independently.  In order for all children in our class to learn, they need rules to follow. Without structure, the behavior of some children may distract others, prohibiting them from learning.  With your support of our classroom discipline system, I will be better able to teach and help your child reach his/her full potential.

EMERGENCIES: Please make sure I have the correct and updated emergency numbers and information on file for your child.

EXPECTATIONS: Peebles Elementary is full of great EXPECTATIONS!!!

FRIENDSHIP:  We should always be a friend to everyone!

INCENTIVES: Based upon school wide behavior students can earn tickets and brownie points.

JOBS:  JOBS in the classroom will be assigned to promote responsibility and ownership of the classroom.

JUNE BOX:  5B maintains a JUNE BOX where we house all items students might be tempted to play with at their desk during instruction.  There is always a warning for the student to place the item in an appropriate place where it would not distract anyone from learning.  If the item surfaces again during learning, it is housed safely in the JUNE BOX until the last day of school when all items are returned to their owner.

KINDNESS:  Students in 5B are encouraged and expected to treat all members of our school with KINDNESS and respect.

LUNCH: LUNCH is a time to eat healthy.

LOVE of LEARNING: This year will be filled with many lessons and activities that will help your child to truly enjoy LEARNING and to carry that LOVE for LEARNING with them as they grow.

Mrs. Cornell:  Everyone in 5B is special to Mrs. Cornell!

MATH: Our MATH series is Harcourt MATH.

MAKE-UP WORK:  All MAKE-UP WORK will be either sent home either on the day of the absence with their homework buddy or upon a child's return to school. He/she may be asked to come to 5B after lunch to receive help from Mrs. Cornell on material introduced during his/her absence.

NEWS: Throughout the year I may send home a NEWS note to keep you informed of 5B happenings. It may contain information about what skills we are working on, upcoming events, a change in our schedule, etc.

ORGANIZATION:  Help your child to maintain ORGANIZATION with regard to homework, book bag, and school related activities.  This is a great skill to carry over into every aspect of the day.

PROCESS WRITING:  We will be working on improving our writing skills through the WRITING PROCESS:  brainstorm, draft, conference, edit, and publish.

PARENTS AS PARTNERS:  PARENTS, you are a vital part of your child's education.  I need you to be a PARTNER by: checking your child's homework, signing your child's homework where applicable, practicing your child's spelling words and math facts and by listening to them read, read, read! I am looking forward to being a PARTNER with you!

Our PTA provides many opportunities for your child.

QUIET TIMES: During tests and when others are speaking the children are to be QUIET.  Children may ask each other questions that relate to their work during independent work times if they use their soft voices.

QUESTIONS: I encourage everyone to ask QUESTIONS...it's a great tool to help us learn.

READING:  Our COMMUNICATION ARTS series is Harcourt's StoryTown.  READING instruction consists of READING, Writing, Spelling, and English.  We will strive to develop comprehension, vocabulary, and writing skills.
