North Allegheny Appoints New Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Education
Mrs. Melissa Friez will replace Dr. David Christopher at the beginning of the 2019-2020 school year.
At the July 17, 2019, Combined Meeting, the North Allegheny Board of School Directors unanimously approved the appointment of Mrs. Melissa Friez to the position of Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Education. Mrs. Friez will succeed Dr. David Christopher who was recently appointed the Superintendent of Cumberland Valley School District. The effective date of appointment is August 19, 2019.
For the past five years, Mrs. Friez has served as an Assistant Superintendent in the Pittsburgh Public School District. In her current role as the Assistant Superintendent of Student Support Services, she oversees counselors, social workers, athletics, code of conduct, positive behavior intervention and support services, Early College in High School, Title IX, the District’s crisis response team, and a variety of other services that support student academic, social and emotional needs.
Prior to her current role, Mrs. Friez served as the Assistant Superintendent of Instructional Leadership for Pittsburgh Public. In this role, she oversaw four high schools, five 6-12 schools, and three specialty schools. Her responsibilities involved working with building level administrators on the successful implementation of building-level goals and creating and providing professional development on instruction and leadership. She also worked with the Chief Information Officer in the successful roll out of technology, data systems and technical support for schools.
Prior to her role as an Assistant Superintendent, Mrs. Friez served nine years as a high school principal, with eight of those years leading Allderdice High School. During her time at Allderdice, Mrs. Friez managed a $13-million-dollar site-based budget for 1,600 students, and over 130 staff members. During her tenure, her school received a Title I Distinguished School award, and was named Pennsylvania High School Student Assistance Program of the Year. She also served as a District Lead Principal and mentor Principal in the Pittsburgh Emerging Leaders Academy.
Mrs. Friez received her Bachelor’s degree in English Literature and Psychology from the University of Pittsburgh, a Master’s degree in Secondary English Education from Duquesne University, K-12 Principal Certification from Carlow University and obtained her Superintendent’s Letter of Eligibility from the University of Pittsburgh where she is working on her dissertation in pursuit of a Doctoral Degree in Administrative and Policy Studies.
“Mrs. Friez’s experience will be an invaluable resource to North Allegheny as we continue to grow, provide innovative opportunities for our students and staff, and prepare all students for success in a changing world,” shared Superintendent Dr. Robert Scherrer. “Her familiarity and leadership in secondary education will be a great asset to the District and our administrative team. We’re looking forward to welcoming her at the beginning of the new school year in August.”
The District also wishes Dr. David Christopher well in his new position with Cumberland Valley School District. “Dr. Christopher has been a proven dedicated member of the North Allegheny community for the last several years. We are truly grateful for his leadership and wish him continued success in leading the Cumberland Valley School District,” added Dr. Scherrer.
