• New Procedures for Students Riding Alternate Buses begin November 12

The safety of our students remains a top priority at North Allegheny, and we are constantly reviewing procedures and protocols to ensure that the best practices are in place.

Beginning Monday, November 12, we will be implementing new procedures for students riding alternate buses. In some cases, it may be necessary for a student to ride a bus or get off at a stop that is different from their regular bus route. When that is necessary, the student’s school will handle the request and issue the bus pass that notifies the bus driver that the student is permitted to ride the bus or get off at an alternate stop.

To request that a student be permitted to ride an alternate bus or to get off at an alternate stop, please follow the process outlined below beginning November 12:

    • Parents/guardians must notify the school that their child will be getting off at an alternate stop or riding an alternate bus home.
      • Parents/guardians can email or call the school, or send a note with their student.
      • Requests must be made by noon on the day of the request.
    • The school will determine whether or not the request is valid. If the request is denied, the school will notify the parent/guardian at the time of the request.
    • The school will complete the bus pass and provide the pass to the student, OR the bus monitor will provide the pass to the bus driver of the alternate bus.

The following guidelines will be considered by the school and Transportation Department when a parent/guardian requests for a student to ride an alternate bus:

    • The student must be accompanied by another student. Students may only ride an alternate bus if accompanying another student who regularly rides that bus.
    • Alternate buses are only to be used in the case of an emergency or for one time child care purposes. Students are not permitted to ride an alternate bus for social activities.
    • A student may have no more than two other students ride the bus with them, and no more than three additional students are permitted on each bus on any given day. Accommodations will be made for emergency child care arrangements.
    • The school or Transportation Department may deny a request for a student to ride an alternate bus due to bus capacity, safety, discipline, or other reasons.
    • Any student who attempts to board a bus that they are not assigned to will not be permitted on the bus unless they have a valid bus pass.

Thank you for your ongoing support as we work to prepare all students for success in a changing world.
