How Does North Allegheny School District Staff Report a COVID-19 Case?

When and How Will Families and Staff Members be Notified About a Positive Case?

    • The District will notify parents/guardians via email when their student has been in a classroom, bus, sports team, or activity with a student or staff member who has tested positive for COVID-19 or attends a school in which someone has tested positive for COVID-19. There are two types of communication that will occur:
      • When a student or staff member is present in a classroom, bus, sports team, or activity where an individual tests positive for COVID-19:
        • Staff and parents/guardians will receive written communication via email sharing that they may have been in close contact with a person who has tested positive for COVID-19.
        • The letter will contain action steps to be taken and any recommendations provided by the Allegheny County Health Department.
        • If there are multiple cases in one day, the District will send one email per day to staff, parents/guardians, etc. with cases grouped together.

When Can a Staff Member or Student Return to School After Testing Positive?

    • A staff member who is exposed to a positive case of COVID-19 through close contact will be required to quarantine for 5 days.
    • A student who is exposed to a positive case of COVID-19 through close contact, such as living with a COVID-19 positive individual, will be required to stay home for at least 10 days, or as advised by a licensed medical professional/the Allegheny County Health Department. Students who are quarantined will have the ability to follow along with classroom instruction from home.
      • If a student who is exposed had a positive COVID-19 diagnosis in 90 days prior to being a close contact, they may be exempt from quarantine. A copy of the positive test results should be submitted to the school nurse, if this has not already been done.
      • If a student received their last dose of a COVID-19 vaccine at least two weeks prior to being a close contact and wishes to be exempt from quarantine, please contact the school nurse.
    • Students/staff members who test positive can return when at least 10 days have passed since symptoms first appeared and 24 hours with no fever without the use of fever-reduction medications and other symptoms of COVID-19 are improving. The District will excuse these absences by considering them as days missed for medical reasons.
    • Students/Staff members will be under quarantine for 10 days after last exposure to the ill individual, which may be as late as day 10 of their illness if they can not isolate the sick individual.
