Reading is the most important skill your child will ever learn. In my classroom, students are expected to be able to read simple sentences and stories by the end of first grade. By third grade, they are expected to be able to read almost any genre. As well as being able to "sound out" (phonetically decode) our weekly spelling words, children must also master reading basic, common sight words.

Sight words make up 50 to 70 percent of any general text. Therefore, teaching The Dolch Word List is a common crucial goal of education in grades kindergarten through 3. Sight words must be automatically recognized in order to achieve reading fluency. Our reading series refers to “sight words” as high-frequency words.

Many of the Dolch words cannot be "sounded out" and have to be learned by "sight", that is memorized. A variety of techniques are used to teach these words to increase fluency that are essential to literacy. The techniques used in my classroom include literature books (decodable books), flash cards, playing games (bingo/SPLAT), and numerous writing activities. Repetition and practice are of utmost importance in making recognition of sight words automatic.  Students are able to read fluently, increase comprehension, and display automaticity of high-frequency words with repetition!

Major Areas Involved In Reading Instruction
Phonemic Awareness (being able to identify and manipulate the smallest units of sound)
Phonological Awareness (the awareness of sounds structure in spoken words)
Print Concept (punctuation, sentence structure, grammar, etc.)
Sight Word Recognition (words that we know by looking at them, rather than decoding them)
Word Building and Direct Instruction (done with letter cards)
Guided and Independent Reading (done in small and large group settings)

    ROBUST VOCABULARY
Vocabulary at North Allegheny focuses on three types of vocabulary: Sight words, Decodable vocabulary and "Robust Vocabulary". This third type of word is taught with the intent to enrich and expand our children's oral vocbulary and comprehension. These words are presented within the context of our story. The weekly lessons are designed to expand the students' basic understanding of each word. Students are given multiple opportunities to use these words in different contexts throughout the weekly lesson activities. You will note that these words are "above grade-level".

The North Allegheny School District will be using the spelling series which accompanies the Harcourt Storytown reading series.  You will notice that in each list, 2 words are “review” and 2 are “sight” words. In addition to these, the District has provided “extension words(beginning with week 7) to enrich lessons, extend learning and challenge our students. We encourage our students to learn the entire list.
