In 2009 Mr. Furlong became a PA Keystone Technology Integrator. Keystone teachers bring to the classroom technology-based content, and motivational, and management expertise to capture students' imaginations and harness learning in our children. Over 7,000 teachers from across the Commonwealth have been identified as Keystones. These Keystones represent over 400 school districts, non-public schools, and CTCs/AVTSs. Approximately 100 Keystones attend a five-day Summit each year in the summer where they engage in hands-on workshops covering topics such as the PDE Standards Aligned System, e-learning, and teaching in the 21 st Century. Since 2001, Mr. Furlong has taught music courses at MMS, with a concentration in Choral/Vocal music and piano. He has also taught percussion, and general music classes. Mr. Furlong has served as Stage Manager and Stage Crew sponsor, and has directed the MMS Talent Show and served as AV coordinator. He has been a guest speaker on music technology for PMEA district 1 at Carnegie-Mellon University. Other credits include serving as a mediator for round-table discussions for the 2008-2009 Western PA Middle School Conference, and Hosting PMEA Jr. High District Chorus at Marshall Middle during the 2008-2009 school year, as well as performing on bass and guitar and as a vocalist around the Pittsburgh Area. Mr. Furlong continues this year as sponsor of the Choral Ensemble, a select choir comprised of singers from all music areas, open to all students by audition. He continues to pursue excellence in education with a music classroom where each student makes a difference, learning music from diverse genres and time periods, using technology to augment instruction and enhance student learning.
