The first school in McCandless Township was Peebles School. It was a log structure built about 1860 on property owned by the Peebles family. About 1885, the Peebles log building was replaced by a one-room frame building. During 1930 a second room was added to the one-room Peebles School (the present Colaizzi's Hair Salon). In 1947, the enrollment at Peebles was low, and it was decided to close the school and transfer the pupils to the Espe School. In 1949, 24 first-grade pupils from the Peebles area, who were attending Espe School, were transferred back to Peebles, where one room was re-opened. In 1950 property was purchased for a new building, and in 1952 a new six-room building was opened. By the 1953-54 school year, an addition was completed and there were 12 classrooms. In 1965, construction began for an additional 6 classrooms. On September 22, 1998, we had a ground-breaking ceremony, including the entire staff and student body, the superintendent, assistant superintendent, school board members, parents, the architect, and the former, longtime principal of Peebles School, Mr. Steve Morris. The school's seven million dollar renovation had begun. Peebles's second principal, Ms. Linda Romito, presided over the school's rededication in March, 2000. In the years since our "Grand Rededication" we have transformed the "old Peebles" into a shining, state-of-the-art "new Peebles." Our school is a beautiful building that allows us to use all of our talents and let our energy shine. Come visit our school!
