Scary Stories for Halloween ---- Moonlit Road

5 stars

Halloween Games

Moonlit Road is a collection of ghost stories with "roots in Southern culture and folklore." Most stories (offered in both text and audio) are adaptations of folktales passed down through the oral tradition, but a few are new, published with permission from the author. The audio files are excellent, as are the Cultural Background pages you'll find on each story page.

Family Role in Literacy Instruction
Want to improve students' reading? Scholastic's 2008 Kids & Family Reading Report notes that "parents who read books for fun daily are six times more likely . . . to have kids who also read for fun daily." The following NCTE guidelines suggest more ways adults can help children develop reading and writing abilities:

SpellingCity offers several fun (and free) ways to practice
spelling, including a simulated spelling bee using lists that you
or your students create--complete with audio of each word used in
a sentence. You can also create games such as HangMouse, Word
Search, and UnScramble: http://www.spellingcity.com/

Leveled Book Lists

These lists have been developed for two reasons:

  1. for parents who have requested help in finding books at their child's reading level.
  2. for teachers who have requested a leveled book list or have asked for help in their effort to build a leveled library in their classrooms.

The Perils and Promise of Praise

Into the Book - student tutorial

Children who are read to on a regular basis show more interest in books and learning to read.  Looking at the pictures, hearing and seeing the words, and talking about what happened in the story gives pre-readers the tools they need to develop into independent readers.
