Type	Definition	Example
Metaphor	Makes a comparison between two unrelated things	The night sea was an inkwell. Her anger is full of the sun's fury.
Simile	Makes a comparison using the words like or as	That man is as old as the moon. I'm so close to him that he's like a brother to me.
Personification	An emotion or anything that is not human (love, a tree, a mountain, and so on) that is given human qualities	The sun was smiling down. A vine gropes its way up the wall.
Onomatopoeia	Words that imitate the objects or actions they refer to	Ka-boom! Sizzle Tweet

Rhythm: the pattern of sounds that occur repeatedly through the lines of a poem
Rhyme: words that are similar to each other because their basic sound features are the same
Repetition: the use of the same word or words in a repeated pattern to create emphasis or to contribute to a poem's rhythm
Imagery: language that stimulates the five senses

The PSSA test for grade 5 encompasses concepts up to and including grade 5. This test is a measurement of the complete elementary program and is not to be considered or evaluated as solely a fifth-grade test. Preparation for the PSSA test cannot occur in a day or two but must be an ongoing developmental process beginning at the primary levels. The recommendations that are reflected in this manual must become part of the guidelines for all elementary grades.
