Family tips on Developing Comprehension

Week 3

·         Develop the reader's ability to decode words quickly.

The student who confidently uses phonics, word analogies, word analysis (prefixes and suffixes) at a rapid rate is more likely to comprehend what has been read.  The student who has to puzzle over too many new words or doesn't have a firm sight vocabulary is at a disadvantage in comprehension

Week 2

·         Make mental images as you read.

·    Reread if something doesn't make sense the first time.

·     Change reading rate depending on the type of material the student is reading.

·     Teach students to predict what might happen next.  As students make predictions they have to mentally think   about what they have already read and connect the rest with a logical prediction.

Week 1

This is one reason we use KWL (know- want to know- and learn) at school.

Talk to your child a bit about the nonfiction he is starting to read.

"What do we know about bats already?  What size do we think they are?"

State something you want to find out about bats, "I am wondering where bats live?  Are they only in caves?"

State ," remember as we read this we want to  find out some cool facts about bats. "

As  you read together, pause at the end of a page and say, "I heard that bats are nocturnal -  they come out at night."   After a few times, let your child

do the restating  with support and encouragement.  This helps develop longer term recall.

As you complete the book, state , "We learned that bats..."  (asking your child to contribute 2 or 3 things they learned)  "The Most Interesting thing

                we read was that  bats..."
