John F. Kennedy Profiles in Courage Essay Contest
The John F. Kennedy Profiles in Courage Essay Contest invites high school students to consider the concept of political courage by writing an essay on a U.S. official who has chosen to do what is right, rather than what is expedient.   You will describe and analyze the decisions, actions, and risks of an elected public official in the United States since 1956 who has courageously addressed a political issue at the local, state, national, or international level.  Contestants will write an original and creative essay of less than 1,000 words to demonstrate understanding of political courage.

Winning essayists will receive awards totaling up to $8,500. The first-place winner will be invited to accept the award at the Profile in Courage Award Ceremony hosted each May by Caroline Kennedy and Senator Edward M. Kennedy at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in Boston.

The deadline for the contest is January 10, 2009.  If I have piqued your interest, why not Google "Profiles in Courage Contest" and get more details.  Like I always say...Somebody has to win these contests, why not YOU!

United States Institute of Peace - National Peace Essay Contest:

Topic: Confronting Crimes Against Humanity

The high number of civilian deaths caused by the war in Darfur underscores the need for concerned governments and organizations to find effective ways of protecting civilians from mass killing and targeted attacks in conflicts.   Although many policymakers, experts, and practitioners recognize the need to protect civilians from crimes against humanity, there is little consensus on the best way to achieve that end.

Here's all  you have to do:  Write a 1500-word essay, discuss how international actors (the UN, regional organizations, governments, and/or non-governmental organizations) can improve their capacity to implement the responsibility to protect civilians from crimes against humanity during conflict.     For more information, visit http://www.usip.org/ed/npec/.   Again, some student is going to win this contest...it could be YOU!
