Veteran's Day Parade Awards

The North Allegheny Marching Band won it’s 7th consecutive “BEST OVERALL BAND” award at the City of Pittsburgh’s annual Veteran’s Day Parade on November 11, 2010.
In addition to the “BEST OVERALL BAND” the group was also awarded the following:

Dance Team- first place
Majorette Squad- first place
Outstanding Drum Major Performance

There were 20 bands in all competing in the parade and included:

Hampton, North Hills, Plum, Central Catholic, Pine- Richland, Peters Township, West Mifflin, Shaler, Penn Hills, Northgate, Taylor Allderdice, Carrick, Chartiers Valley, Brentwood, Canevin, Keystone Oaks, Oliver, Sto-Rox, Upper St. Clair

National History Day Competition

Sophia Taborski from North Allegheny Intermediate High School was a top-six winner for the state competition level of National History Day in Millersville, PA.  Sophia gave a ten-minute presentation on Marquis de Lafayette and his leadership role in both the American and French Revolutions.  She portrayed his pious wife, Marie Adrienne Francioise de Noailles, praying for Lafayette and his safety. 

Sophia wrote the script based on extensive reading and research including original source documentation.  Her GOAL teacher, Mrs. Urbaniak stated, “Sophia’s acumen on Marquis de Lafayette is astounding and her individual preparation for this competition was a labor of love.”     

Knowledge Master Team - State Champs

Our 9th grade Knowledge Master team is the Spring 2009 Pennsylvania State Champion!

The “KMO” is a computerized competition. Students must answer 200 multiple choice questions and are scored on both accuracy and speed of response.  Our team gave the correct answer for 194 questions.  Their score for the Spring 2009 competition was 1622 – an improvement over their Fall 2008 score of 1559.

Mathematics League 2008-2009

Kostya Borisov (10th grader) was the First Place Individual League High Scorer and North Allegheny High School Highest Individual Score for the Mathematics Council of Western PA Senior High (9-12) Mathematics League 2008-2009.  He participated in every contest (once a month from October through March) and out of a possible 36 points he scored a 32.  Our five top scorers participated in the finals competition on Tuesday April 28th and Kostya earned every point possible.  Our team ended up taking first place.

2009 National Latin Exam Honors

            Four freshmen from North Allegheny Intermediate High School scored perfect papers on the 2009 National Latin Exam. These Latin students were Alan Dai, Stephanie Fulton, Samir Jindel and Yuzhou Zou.  Pupils from the Intermediate High School joined more than 135,000 Latin students from all over the nation and from 11 foreign countries to test their knowledge of grammar, vocabulary, mythology, Latin reading comprehension, and Roman history and culture.
Latin I students at NAI garnered 23 gold medals and 17 silver medals.  Gold medals winners were (see attached list).  Winning silver medals were (see attached list).
Nine gold medals and 15 silver medals went to Latin II students at the Intermediate High School.  Gold medals were earned by (see attached list). Taking silver were (see attached list).
Latin I students earning Magna Cum Laude certificates on the exam were Alexander Bengtson, Christine Figan, Ali Karsh, Cole Minahan, Pavara Ranatunga, and Morgan Shaber- Twedt.
Magna Cum Laude certificates were awarded to the following Latin II students:  Marielena Balouris, Alysse Berry, Thomas Helgerman, Irene Onufrey, Chris Rudzinskas, and Andrew Stoof. 
Cum Laude certificates in Latin I went to Haley Ference, Sean Kurtz, Kelsey Smith, Amy Strickland, and Kevin Zhang.  Latin II students earning Cum Laude recognition were Jenn Milkey and Sophie Seel.

Euro Challenge National Competition

Five students from North Allegheny Intermediate High School were awarded a trip to New York City for the national Euro-Challenge Competition.  Approv Dhir,  Thomas Helgerman, Andrea Evankovich, Lili Peng and Katie Adams worked cooperatively for months to prepare a fifteen minute presentation focused on the current economic situation in the euro area and  the slow economic growth of Portugal. 

After winning the regional competition and edging-out a strong team from North Carolina, these students will present their project at the New York Federal Reserve Bank on April 29th. 

The Euro Challenge is an exciting educational opportunity for students to learn about the United States’ biggest trading partner.  The program was created to promote economic and financial literacy, and build a better understanding of economic policy issues within the European Union.  The competition is organized and funded by The Moody’s Foundation, Credit Suisse Bank, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, and Deloitte.

Shakespearean Monologue Contest

Congratulations go out to Adair Creach, Andy Hickley and Lauren Shideler who will be performing at the O’Reilly Theater this evening as finalists in the Pittsburgh Public Theater’s Shakespearean Monologue Contest.   Over 1000 students from all over the city audition for this contest each year and only 30 acts make it to the finals, so this is quite an honor.   The contest finals are free and open to the public at 7pm tonight.   Break a leg, Adair, Andy and Lauren!

Hockey

Christopher Fenn, a sophomore at NAI has been selected to represent the USA Deaf Hockey Team in Winnipeg, Canada. The USA team is competing for the World Championship Cup. Christopher will leave for Winnipeg to begin this honorable adventure on April 7.

Forensics

Harvard Competition - Bryan Hogg (senior) and debate partner Richard Bochicchio (sophomore) broke to the top 64 in varsity public forum. In novice public forum debate, freshmen Anis Adnani and Kevin Zhang broke to the top 64.

Bethel Park Competition

Hundreds of Students Flock to the Halls to Recognize Captain Bill McClelland

NAI Social Studies teacher and captain in the Army National Guard, Bill McClelland, was recognized on January 23 on his last day of teaching before serving a 12 month deployment in Iraq.

NA Students Take First in the Nation in the Knowledge Master Competition

On December 3, 2008, students across the United States and in several foreign countries competed in the Knowledge Master Competition.  During this competition, the students faced their computer and 200 tough questions to vie for top scores based on the accuracy and speed of their answers. 

Congratulations to the North Allegheny Intermediate High School 9th grade Knowledge Master Team for an outstanding performance in the event. 

The ten students on the North Allegheny Intermediate High School team scored 1,559 of 2,000 possible points to place first in the state of Pennsylvania and third overall in a field of 117 Junior High and Intermediate High Schools.  Among schools with similar enrollments, North Allegheny Intermediate was also first in the state and first in the nation in Division IV.  The mean score earned by students in this year’s competition was 1268.

The team sponsor, Mrs. Serdy, described the event as “fun-filled, fast-paced and very challenging.  Our students look forward to the competition every year.  They are to be commended for their dedication, excellent team work and overall academic achievement.”

NA Marching Band Selected to Represent Pennsylvania in the 56th Presidential Inauguration Parade

The North Allegheny High School Marching Band has been chosen to represent the state of Pennsylvania in the 56th Presidential Inauguration Parade in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, January 20, 2009. Here is a hyperlink to a news release with more details: News Release

NAI Students Win Second Place in the Carnegie Science Center's "Chain Reaction Contraption" Contest

On December 5, twenty-seven high schools competed in the Carnegie Science Center's "Chain Reaction Contraption" contest. The teams were required to build a machine that would wrap or unwrap a present in 20 or more steps. NAI students, Jonathan Timcheck, Daniel Lesh, Shane Smith and Tyler Abbs won second place with their "Present Processor."

Their advisor is Sherri Fochler and their mentor is Stephen Reed, a volunteer from Westinghouse.

Speech and Debate

The speech and debate team competed at Bethel Park on November 22. The following received top honors:

  • In Lincoln Douglas Debate – Sophomores Richard Gayler won 1st with a perfect 3-0 record, and Liyan Fan earned 3rd place.
  • In Public Forum Debate – The team of freshmen Anis Adnani and Kevin Zhang won 1st with a perfect record.  These freshmen are undefeated in the two trophy tournaments that they have attended in their debate careers. The team of sophomores Adam Majewski and Griffin Caruso won 5th place.
  • In Extemporaneous Commentary – Junior Connie Yuan brought home the 2nd place trophy, and sophomores Brennan McGovern and Lili Peng earned 3rd and 5th respectively.
  • In impromptu - Sophomore Rona Sun took 5th place.
  • And in radio announcing – Junior Katie Owsiany took 5th place.

Also this past weekend, senior Stacey Chen competed at the Glenbrooks tournament in Chicago.  This tournament is the largest national-level tournament during the regular season, and Stacey came out of her final round with first place rankings from all of her judges to win the prestigious first place in extemporaneous speaking.

 

Video Created by Students for World Diabetes Day 

A video was created by some students here at NAI as a part of a group for students with Diabetes.  The video is titled “Do You Accept this Mission”.  The intent of the video was to send a message to the next President about what he needs to do to end Diabetes and were to be submitted by teens.  This was all part of World Diabetes Day, November 14th.  For each video submitted, a donation was made by Novo Nordisk Inc to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Speech and Debate

At the November Quigley tournament, the North Allegheny Speech and Debate Team took the top FOUR places in Public Forum debate.  NAI students who performed well were freshman newcomers Anis Adnani and Kevin Zhang.  They were the surprise of the day came when they came in second only by a few points to a senior NA team.  Both top teams had 4-0 records.  Sophomores Richard Bochicchio and Lili Peng came in 3rd in Public Forum with a 3-1 record.

In extemporaneous speaking, freshman and first time extemper Abby Stevenson got an award for being one of the top novice extempers at the tournament.

Finally, in congress - new members Akshaya Arjunan, a sophomore, and freshmen Christine Troy took top honors. 

Beatty Technical School Student of the Month Award

Brett Mitchell received the Student of the Month Award in the category of Advanced Computer Programming.

PMEA District 1 Honors Band

District One includes over 550 school and private music teachers from Allegheny, Fayette, Greene, Washington and Westmoreland counties. Over 650 students auditioned for approx. 125 spots in the PMEA District 1 Honors Band-

State Competition of the Junior Academy of Science

The North Allegheny Science Research Team , winners of over $25,000 in cash and scholarships this year, made their final research project presentations during the 74th Annual State Meeting of the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science at Penn State University on May 19, 2008  where North Allegheny received 6 First place Awards and 1 Second place award including:
 
Shivani Mehta, a senior at NASH, received a 1st Place award from the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Sciences during the State Competition of the Junior Academy of Science for her Computer Science research entitled: “Differences in age-related SWD’s during motor arrest in rats.”  Shivani Mehta has already received a 1st place award at the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science Regional Competition , a 2nd Place in Senior Division Computer Science and 2 sponsor awards from the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center and the University of Pittsburgh Department of  Neuroscience at the Pittsburgh Regional Science and Engineering Fair.
 
Jon Lin, a junior at NASH, received a 1st Place award from the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Sciences during the State Competition of the Junior Academy of Science for his Microbiology research entitled: “Sunscreen Effectiveness Against UV Radiation in E. coli.”  Jon has already received a 1st place award during the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science Regional Competition.
 
Katherine Luo, a junior at NASH, received a 2nd Place award from the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Sciences during the State Competition of the Junior Academy of Science for his Microbiology research entitled: “Tea Signaling.”  Katherine has already received a 1st place award during the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science Regional Competition.
 
Jay Seghal, a sophomore at NAI, received a 1st place at the State Competition of the Junior Academy of Science for his medical Research project entitled: “Scaffold Degradation” Jay has already received a 1st place at the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science Regional competition in February.
 
Richard Gayler, a freshman at NAI, received a 1st Place award, perfect score, and the Zappa Junior Award from the Pennsylvania Academy of Sciences during the State Competition of the Junior Academy of Science for his Physics research entitled “Maximizing Solar Panel Output.”  Richard has already received a 1st place at the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science Regional Competition, a 2nd Place in Senior Division Physics, 2 Sponsor awards from the Eaton Corporation and The Technology Collaborative, and 1 Affiliate Sponsor 1st Place Award from the U.S. Army during the Pittsburgh Science and Engineering Fair held previously this school year.
 
Julie Wu, a freshman at NAI  earned a 1st place and perfect score at the State Competition of the Junior Academy of Science for her Cancer Research project entitled:  “Potential Anti-Obesity Drug Effects on Bile Duct Cell Growth” Julie has already won a 1st place award at the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science Regional competition in February and  a 1st Place from the U.S. Air Force during the Pittsburgh Science and Engineering Fair in April.
 
Skanda Koppula, a seventh grader at IMS, received a 1st place at the State Competition of the Junior Academy of Science for his Computer Research project entitled: “A Study of Inter-Robot Communication.” Skanda has already received a 1st place at the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science Regional competition in February.

Thirteen students from NAI have been selected for enrollment in the National Junior Classical League Latin Honor Society for 2007-2008. They are Andrew Adam, Bryan Caswell, Megan Doerzbacher, Kearsie Dougherty, Laura Marti, Jenna Mulligan, Michael Noh, Sean Radermacher, Natalie Rogers, Kelsey Steele, Dasun Wang, Rachel Weaver, and Julie Wu.

Five freshmen from NAI scored perfect papers on the 2008 National Latin Exam. These Latin students were Bailey Blashford, Kearsie Dougherty, Julia Meyer, Sean Nimmo, and Lauren Shideler.  Latin I students at NAI garnered 16 gold medals and 9 silver medals on the test.  Seventeen gold medals and 13 silver medals were earned by Latin II students at the Intermediate High School. 

North Allegheny students did incredibly well at the PMEA Western Region Orchestra Festival this past week!
All of the musicians who went to Region Orchestra placed in the top half of the orchestra and are now progressing on to the All-State Orchestra and Band Festivals.

Six North Allegheny BAND students have auditioned into the PMEA All-State Honors Ensembles. We have 3 Band students in the All-State Band and 3 Band students in the All-State Orchestra. 5 of the six are not only in the All-State ensembles, but earned a first chair spot. These are truly 6 of the finest musicians in all of the state.

17 members of the North Allegheny Science Research Team competed at Upper St. Clair High School on Saturday February 2 in the Regional Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science. 

Students receiving First place Awards included: Shivani Mehta (NASH), Jonathan Lin (NASH), Katherine Luo (NASH), Richard Gayler (NAI), Jay Segal (NAI), Ava Miller (NAI), Julie Wu (NAI), and Skanda Koppula (IMS). These students are now invited to the State Competition of the PJAS in May at Penn State.
