GIVING HOPE TO THOSE WHO HAVE NONE
Aid to the Children of Darfur
It started as an idea shared by four friends….Julian Barnes, Kaysee Conaway, Kim Gilmour and Cameron Flayer. These students wanted to make a difference and they also wanted their classmates to be informed of the current conditions causing the displacement of youth in the Sudan region. Empowered with an idea and their personal commitment, these four students lead a one-week campaign to raise awareness and $2,314.20 for “Doctors Without Borders” and “Invisible Children.”
The GOAL and Social Studies Departments, worked cooperatively with the student team on this endeavor. A 40-minute presentation was prepared that included the movie “Invisible Children” to be seen by all Social Studies classes. The Social Studies teachers at NAI provided the historical background of the Darfur region conflict and the student committee prepared a handout offering easy ways each student could get involved. Suggestions included advocacy through Amnesty International or donating 20 grains of rice at www.freerice.com. To raise funds, bracelet making parties were held after school. With the help of Key Club members and volunteers, more than 1,000 cord and bead bracelets were handmade to sell to our student body. |
