Dear Marshall Parents,
We want to thank everyone for their support and understanding of the procedures we are following in accordance with the North Allegheny School District Board Policy #3441, Student Wellness. In an effort to maintain a safe and healthy school environment for all children, several guidelines are provided.
While we understand the importance of being able to share a treat for special events, such as a birthday, we strongly recommend non-edible treats (i.e. pencils, stickers, erasers, etc.). If parents decide to not utilize non-edible treats, acceptable edible snacks are: pretzel rods, apple slices, graham crackers, fresh fruits, vegetables, low-fat yogurt cups, cereal bars, applesauce cups, juice boxes (low sugar/light), raisins, dried fruits, or low-fat animal crackers. Parents should also know that birthdays are recognized during the morning announcements to help acknowledge a child’s special day!
If you choose to send in an edible treat, you are required to notify the school nurse. To expedite requests we are requiring you to notify the classroom teacher at least 48 hours in advance by completing the Edible Treat form (see link below). The teachers will share the information on the form with the school nurse. You would be notified if there is a problem with the request. The purpose of the 48-hour notification allows the nurse to review ingredients and check against the identified food allergies within the homeroom. This process also serves as a way to maintain class schedules and decrease interruptions in learning time. When prior notification is given, it allows the teacher adequate time to determine, in advance, when the treat might best be distributed. Healthy food choices increase our children’s awareness of nutrition.
Additionally, the District’s Food Service Department can provide healthy alternative snacks at a reasonable cost. They can be contacted at 724-924-7201.
During a child’s growth period, it is essential to emphasize this component of personal wellness. Healthy food choices increase our children’s awareness of nutrition. Our elementary staff, in collaboration with caring, conscientious parents, wants to continue to provide all our children with a safe school environment. The MES staff thanks you again for your support and cooperation.
Sincerely,
James Bradley, Ed.D. Amanda Mathieson
