The meeting was called to order by PFA President Heather Schwartzbauer at 9:23 am in the lower gym.  Valerie Cook, secretary, was present.

Welcome – Heather Schwartzbauer

Heather welcomed everyone to the meeting.

Approval of September Minutes – Heather Schwartzbauer

Minutes of the September 2, 2009 meeting were distributed before today’s meeting and were approved as written.

Treasurer’s Report – Marilyn Adams

There was a discussion regarding the removal of the classroom supplies line item of $1,500 from the budget.  A motion was made to remove this item from the budget, and was unanimously passed.

Check request forms must be signed by the committee chair before turning in to the treasurer.  If you have an invoice, you can sign off on the invoice rather than filling out a check request form.

If you have copies that are made up at Central, please hand in the pink slip that comes back with your copies to the treasurer.  Some invoices are not very descriptive and it can be difficult to determine to which account the charges belong.

Party request forms envelopes will be available for the Winter and Valentine’s Day parties.

Principal’s Report – Mr. Steve Parks

Thank you to the PFA for a great start to the school year.  The Ice Cream Social was great and everyone had a lot of fun.

Construction update:  Workers will be on our property to complete part of their work, but this will be done after school hours.  Our hillside will be altered, but we will not be able to see Lowe’s.

A survey will be going home for fifth grade parents regarding an after school foreign language program.  The program will be district wide, and taught by North Allegheny language teachers.  This will be a 6-week pilot program and will run in February.

The Homework Club is a need-based group for those children who are having trouble with organization skills, forgetting their homework, etc.  The high school honor society students and LaRoche student teachers help run the club.  Talk to your child’s teacher if you think your child might benefit.

The Friendship groups are run by Mrs. Biro during lunch time.  Please get a referral from your teacher.

Important dates coming up:

Oct 12 – TAG week

CogAT testing for first grade

Oct. 30 – Halloween parade/ parties – 1:30.  If the weather is not cooperative, the parade will be in the gym and cafeteria.

Nov. 2 and 3 - Conferences

Faculty Liaison Report – Mrs. JoAnn Vandergrift

Thank you for your Camp Kon-O-Kwee support.   Mr. Litz will be sending home a note through next month’s Megaphone asking for coffee cans for the camp cooking activity.

Meet the Teacher nights went well; thank you for signing up for conferences.  Teachers will be contacting those who did not sign up that night.  Please contact your child’s teacher if you need to schedule a conference.

The students loved the pep assembly.

The teachers are looking forward to the Halloween parties.  Please do not have extra parents come to the parties; only those that are assigned to the party should be in attendance.  Please do not bring younger siblings.

The teachers understand that the classroom supplies monies that have been given in previous years were not a guarantee each year.  The indoor recess books and games drive may help with items for the classroom.

Standing Committee Reports

Book Fair – Julie Tarle

The theme is “Passport to Reading”.  This is not a fundraiser for the general PFA fund – all of the proceeds go directly to the library.  Browse week is October 26-30; Buying week is November 2-6.  We will be open during parent/teacher conferences.  Family Night is November 4.  Teachers get a sneak preview and will be entered for a gift card drawing.

Volunteer forms will be coming home shortly; we need lots of help, especially on conference days.  We also need help for setup on October 23, and for tear down on November 6.

Fundraising – Jane Wright for Eileen Coran

Thank you to everyone who helped process orders.  We made around $13,000, but the bill has not yet been paid, so this number is an estimate.  The winners of the Breakfast are 1C and KA.  Fundraiser pick up is October 29.  Please make every effort to pick up your items that day.

Square 1 artwork will be sent home on October 29.  Orders are due by November 13.  Pick up will be December 4 at the Holiday Shop.

Finance Team – Mary Mann

There has been some confusion in regard to what the finance team does.  Because this is a new committee we are learning as we go along as to what works and what doesn’t.  If you are collecting money, the committee chairperson should contact the finance team to coordinate the collection.

Also, based on the confusion at the last meeting regarding reading the budget, we created a more visual way of looking at the budget with a pie chart of both income and expenses.

Giant Eagle – Sara Hammel

The Apples for Students program allows us to support our school by using our Advantage Card every time we shop at Giant Eagle.  Please register your Advantage Card at gianteagle.com.  Our school ID code is 0682.  This is an easy fundraiser in which to participate.  Currently we have 447 supporters.

Prepaid Shopping Cards – Sara Hammel

Order forms for the shopping cards will be in the November Megaphone.  Again, this is an easy fundraiser to participate in.

Holiday Shop – Mary Mann

The Holiday Shop will run on December 4 from 4:30-7:30 pm and December 5 from 9:00 am – 1:00 pm.  We will be having the Vendor Fair again this year, and we are looking for additional vendors.  A vendor sign up flyer will be coming home shortly.  Something new this year is Animaland, which is like Build-a-Bear.  More information will be going home closer to the shop date.

Membership – Mary Mann

The committee is finishing up the corrections, and then the directory will be printed and distributed.

Room Parents – Heather Schwartzbauer for Carolyn Bergeron

Coordinator packets will be in the Thursday envelope.

SPLC – Jane Wright

The meeting is tomorrow, October 8.  We will be discussing safety, facilities and development.

TAG – Valerie Cook for Dena Solman

Sign ups for classroom presentations went well.  Thank you to all of the volunteers.  The first presentation week is October 12.

UBO – Lynn Winger

The Unified Boosters Organization (UBO) representative is the liaison between the sports clubs and the school.  The UBO hosts the annual North Allegheny Kennywood Day, which will be Wednesday, June 16, 2010.

Welcoming Committee – Erin Toomey

We have 34 new students to McKnight and the committee is getting packets of information ready to welcome them.

If you are a chairperson and have not yet picked up your name tag, they are in a basket located in the mail room.

Tiger Shop – Jane Wright

Gift cards are available for sale.  These are a great alternative to hand out as birthday treats or for classroom parties.

Make A Wish – Heather Schwartzbauer for Natalie Abel

This year we will be holding the event at McKnight, and are trying to get the focus back onto the parent-faculty game.  We will also be doing pre-sale tickets.

Market Day – Lori Root

Our school gets 10% on all orders.  The first three months we have done well.  Market Day always needs volunteers, please consider helping for any amount of time.    We can look into placing online orders for home delivery and see if we can get additional participants in this manner.

Parent Networking Group – Lori Root

This is a group for those with children who have IEPs or 504s.  The group meets one Friday a month at the Baierl Center from 9:30-11:30 am.

Announcements

Thank you to the Ice Cream Social committee and the teachers for scooping; thank you also to the Picture Day and Membership committees for your recent efforts.

The UPS Store in the McKnight-Seibert Shopping Center is offering 2 cent black and white copies for the month of October.

As an alternative to printing out flyers, please remember that you can advertise your event on the blog, Megaphone and McKnight Messages.

The meeting adjourned at 11:00 am.
