Monarch Magic |
|
Monarch butterflies fluttered to freedom in McKnight Elementary School’s Wonder Garden. McKnight third graders experienced the beauty of nature and the wonder of learning through their participation in the Monarch Watch project. The students did an inquiry-based study of the butterfly’s life cycle. This study fits perfectly with the Life Cycles unit in the Houghton Mifflin Science program. The students worked measuring, tagging, and recording journal entries and poetry about butterflies. Each butterfly was tagged with a sticker the size of a hole punch. Mrs. Ferguson found a tent that made an awesome Butterfly Habitat until they could be released. The third grade butterfly release was held on Wednesday, September 24, 2008. We were thrilled that Dr. Green, Dr. Stropka, Mr. Parks, and Ms. Fields were able to join us! The students released the butterflies and sent them on their way to Mexico for the winter. Monarch Watch from Kansas University will notify McKnight if any of our butterflies are sighted. Their journey will be tracked by Journey North on the Internet at http://www.learner.org/jnorth/index.html.
