Library/Information Technology at McKnight Elementary School

The following is a brief overview of the library/technology curriculum activities experienced by fourth grade students. 

Library Classes

·         Learn to make independent reading selections according to need and interest.

·         Practice appropriate library and lab behavior and follow district Computer Acceptable Use Policy.

·         Define and locate sections of the library and understand and use its systems of organization.

·         Use the parts of a book (title page, contents, glossary, index, text aids) to locate information within a resource.

·         Identify elements of online library catalog entries and use to locate resources using author, title, subject, and keyword searching.

·         Understand format and use of EASY, Fiction, and Biography call numbers.

·         Understand format of Dewey Decimal system and use to locate Non-Fiction books.

·         Identify characteristics of various genre (biography, historical fiction, mystery, fantasy, poetry, science fiction, informational) and be able to define and classify books by genre type

·         Use district network independently and recognize all desktop icons.

·         Open and close software applications, folders, and files both in Lab and CD folder.

·         Understand and employ district file management procedures including opening, saving and printing files and opening and using templates. 

·         Use word processing skills including entering and editing text, fonts, spacing, justification, spell checker, bullets, use of find and replace, clip art, copying and inserting graphics (December Is Poem, Leprechaun Wishes, Alien April Fool Stories, If I Ruled the World poem, State Profiles).

·         Create computer generated graphics to illustrate a concept (Red Ribbon Week Posters, clip art).

·         Understand features of print reference books (index, headings and subheadings, captions, cross references, tables, charts) and use to locate and record specific information.

·         Understand the terminology of electronic resources (Hyperlink, scrolls bars, search tools, pull down menus, forward, back, refresh )

·         Locate and use specific information from print and electronic dictionaries and encyclopedias.

·         Choose appropriate reference sources, extract information, and use to create simple report or project (United States Research, etc.).

·         Use atlas index and map coordinates to identify specific geographical information.

·         Use an electronic database to locate information (State reports).

·         Use a web browser to access designated web sites and conduct online searches to answer curriculum related questions (Discover Pennsylvania Program, Holidays Around the World Hunt, Black History Mystery, 5 a Day Nutrition Activities).

Classworks GOLD

·         Grades K-5 – All students participate in the Language Arts and Math sections of Classworks GOLD with their classroom teachers.  Librarians are responsible for training of staff and the administration of the class lists and groupings.
