Library/ Information Technology at McKnight Elementary School

The following is a brief overview of the library/technology curriculum activities experienced by  third grade students. 

Library Classes

·         Learn to make independent reading selections according to interest.

  • Demonstrate acceptable behavior in the library and lab.
  • Demonstrate proper use and care of media and equipment.
  • Define and locate sections of the library and understand and use its systems of organization.
  • Locate and use parts of a book (title page, contents, glossary, index)
  • Locate specific authors and titles in the online catalog.
  • Use online catalog to locate resources using author, title, and subject searching.
  • Demonstrate mouse functions, use of Windows commands, and location of special keyboard keys (shift, control, delete, backspace, etc.)
  • Use district network independently.
  • Open and close software applications, folders, and files.
  • Understand and employ district file management procedures including opening, saving, and printing files and opening and using templates. 
  • Understand format and function of EASY, Fiction, and Biography call numbers.
  • Create computer generated graphics and use clip art.
  • Identify story elements and characteristics of various genre (biography, realistic fiction, fantasy, folklore, poetry)
  • Print encyclopedia skills - key word, correct volume, text aids, and index).
  • Locate and use entries in print and electronic dictionaries.
  • Locate and use specific information from print and electronic encyclopedias.  (Black History research, Women’s History Month reports)
  • Use word processing skills including entering and editing text, fonts, spacing, justification, spell checker, and inserting clip art - (Mother Goose Poem, New Year’s Poem, Harriet Tubman report, Earth Day letter, Class Biographical Dictionary)
  • Use an electronic database to locate information. (Ebsco Animal Database, World Book Online)
  • Use a web browser to access designated web sites. ( Old Fashioned Holidays site, Martin Luther King Fact Hunt)
  • Understand the terminology of electronic resources (hyperlink, scroll bar, pull down menus, forward, back, refresh)

Classworks GOLD

·         Grades K-5 – All students participate in the Language Arts and Math sections of Classworks GOLD with their classroom teachers.  Librarians are responsible for training of staff and the administration of the class lists and groupings.
