Library/Information Technology at McKnight
Elementary
School
The following
is a brief overview of the library/technology curriculum activities experienced
by second grade students.

Library Classes
-
Learn to make
independent reading selections according to interest.

Demonstrate
acceptable behavior in the library and lab.

Demonstrate
proper use of materials and equipment.

Locate main
areas of library media center.

Define and
understand library terminology.
-
Identify
basic computer hardware components.
-
Demonstrate
mouse functions, use of Windows commands, and location of special keyboard
keys (shift, control, delete, backspace, etc,)

Use district
network independently.
-
Open and
close software applications, folders, and files.
-
Distinguish
fiction from non-fiction.
-
Apply use of
alphabet in arrangement of EASY book and Fiction section.
-
Use a chart
to locate information.
-
Create
computer generated graphics and make a slide show (Maps, Cool School).
-
Recognize the
terms characters, setting, and plot.
-
Use and
format of simple encyclopedias.
-
Locate
specific information and write a simple report (Bats, Animal Reports, Books
Jobs).

Use word
processing skills including entering and deleting text, font choice, spacing,
justification, and inserting graphics - (Fall Poems, Bat Fact reports, Name
Styles, Winter Poems, Book Job Profiles, Mother’s Day Rebus Stories)

Use contents
and index to locate specific information.

Develop map
skills - use of compass roses, map key, etc.

Use print
materials to locate information on topics (Mexico, Africa, etc.)

Use and
format of simple atlas and atlas index.

Use McKnight
Web site links to access and use designated web sites.
-
Participate
in a variety of literature/genre activities (African Folklore, Poetry,
Caldecott Medal, How Books are Made).
Classworks GOLD
·
Grades K-5 – All students participate in the Language Arts and Math sections of
Classworks GOLD with their classroom teachers. Librarians are responsible for
training of staff and the administration of the class lists and groupings.
