Library/ Information Technology at McKnight Elementary School

The following is a brief overview of the library/technology curriculum activities experienced by first grade students. 

Library Classes

  • Learn to make independent reading selections according to interest.
  • Learn appropriate library behavior.
  • Learn to handle and care for materials and equipment properly.
  • Locate important areas of library media center.
  • Identify basic computer hardware components.
  • Demonstrate mouse functions and use of Windows commands.
  • Demonstrate ability to log on and off district network.
  • Enter and exit software applications, folders, etc.
  • Use shift keys to make capital letters.
  • Develop alphabetizing skills.
  • Apply use of alphabet in arrangement of EASY book section.
  • Use a chart to locate information.
  • Classify factual information on birds and bats and sorting by key topics.
  • Correct procedure for inserting and launching a CD application on district network.
  • Create and print a computer generated graphic with Kid Pix.
  • Participate in a variety of book/storytelling response activities.
  • Develop alphabetizing skills to second letter.
  • Develop word processing skills including entering and deleting text, font choice, spacing, punctuation (Computer Friendly Paper, Fall Sentence, Winter Poem, Leprechaun stories, Wacky Rhymes, etc.)
  • Distinguish between characteristics of fiction and non-fiction.
  • Identification of rhyming words and word families.
  • Identify and use parts of a cover, title page, and contents page.
  • Launch Internet Explorer and use basic browser commands to explore the McKnight web site.
  • Participate in librarian modeled demonstration of Internet usages (ex. Crayola.com)

Classworks GOLD

·         Grades K-5 – All students participate in the Language Arts and Math sections of Classworks GOLD with their classroom teachers.  Librarians are responsible for training of staff and the administration of the class lists and groupings.
