Carson Middle School

Department of Music

6th and 7th Grade Chorus Syllabus

A Note from the Director:  Welcome to chorus!  The middle school years are critical in the positive development of young adults.  Music education is an essential facet of this growth and I am proud to be a part of your child’s educational experience.  My main classroom objective is to help each child achieve success.  The remainder of this syllabus outlines various details needed to aid in your child’s success and achievement.

Purpose:  The purpose of this communication is to familiarize each singer and parent with the policies, regulations, and procedures of the 6th and 7th Grade Chorus program.  The North Allegheny choral program has established itself as an integral part of the total school curriculum.  It is hoped that as a member of this discipline, the students will take pride in our ensemble and help to maintain its high level of performance.  Being a member of a choir is not an easy task, for only diligent students attain the highest levels of achievement.  It is through hard work and high standards that the greatest education and aesthetic experience can be reached.

Behavior:  The conduct of each student in the chorus is vital to the success of the entire ensemble.  Inappropriate and disruptive behavior during class, ensemble rehearsals, and concerts will not be tolerated!  Discipline problems will be handled appropriately and consistently as outlined in the code of conduct.

Participation:  Chorus is a class and activity that is based upon active participation.  100% effort from each student during class, rehearsal, and performance is vital to the success of the ensemble and the learning of each individual child.  Therefore, participation represents a large portion of the student’s grade.

Grading:  Since chorus is not only a class, but also an organization, attendance and conduct affect the efficiency and standing of the organization.  The process of determining a student’s grade will include the evaluation of individual performance, achievement and improvement, knowledge of the music performed, curricular skill development, and attendance and participation at rehearsals and concerts.

Activity period rehearsals:  These rehearsals occur during school.  Rehearsal dates are announced via the PA system and posted outside Mr. Woten’s room.  Attendance is mandatory and points are assessed as stated in the grading section of the syllabus.

After school rehearsals:  We will only have an after-school rehearsal if absolutely necessary.  The date and time will be announced in school with as much advance notice as possible.  The rehearsal will conclude at 4:30pm.  Transportation is the responsibility of the parents.

Text Box: Concerts:  Live concert performance is a vital part of the student’s educational process.  Attendance is mandatory and participation is a major portion of the student’s grade.  These concerts are the student’s only opportunity to display the outcome of their work and they cannot be recreated for students who miss.  Even one child missing has a negative affect on the entire group.  If a student was to miss a performance while having an excuse deemed legal from the district, an alternative assignment will be given.  We perform our in-school and evening concerts on the same date.  Our concert dates are:
 December 4, 2003 evening concert at 7pm, in-school concert - TBA
May 5, 2004 evening concert at 7pm, in-school concert - TBA

Concert attire:  Concerts are formal events and our appearance should be appropriate.  Students are to dress as follows:

girls – black skirt (please be sure that the length fits the school dress code), white top (short or long sleeves), and black shoes (no tennis shoes)

boys – black pants (no jeans), white shirt, dark tie, and black shoes (no tennis shoes)

Chamber Singers:  Chamber Singers is an ensemble that provides vocally talented students an opportunity to pursue the study and performance of diverse choral literature to the highest possible level through a small group setting.  Auditions are required for membership.  Membership is open to any Carson 6th or 7th Grade student that is a member of chorus, band, or orchestra.  If your child is interested more information can be obtained from Mr. Woten.

Sincerely

Mr. Woten, Director
