NEWBERY MEDAL WINNERS

 The Newbery Medal is awarded to the author of the best children's book of the previous year. It is announced by the American Library Association at their midwinter meeting. The award is named after John Newbery, who published many books for children in 18th-century England. The Newbery winners are listed below.

2009 THE GRAVEYARD BOOK

         Neil Gaiman (F GAI)

         The orphan Bod, short for Nobody, is taken in by the inhabitants of a graveyard as a child of      

         eighteen months and raised lovingly and carefully to the age of eighteen years by the community of  

         ghosts and otherworldly creatures.

 

2008  GOOD MASTERS ! SWEET LADIES ! Voices from a Medieval Village 

          Laura Amy Schlitz  (812 Sc36)
          A collection of short one-person plays featuring characters, between 10 and 15 years old,
         who live in or near a 13th-century English manor.

 

2007  THE HIGHER POWER OF LUCKY              

          Susan Patron (F PAT)           
          Fearing that her legal guardian plans to abandon her to return to France, ten-year-old aspiring
          scientist Lucky Trimble determines to run away while also continuing to seek the Higher Power that
          will bring stability to her life.
