BETHEL PARK BOMBS TIGERS, 15-6, TO END SEASON FOR NA

Box Score

The Bethel Park Blackhawks pounded out 19 hits on their way to a 15-6 victory over the Tigers in the PIAA Playoffs at Pullman Park on Monday evening.  Six unearned runs in the second inning gave Bethel Park a 6-0 lead and they never looked back.  Seniors Andrew Duffett and Matt Butler had two hits each to lead the Tigers in their final game for NA.

In the top of the first with one out, CF Zach Simmen lined a single to center field  but was promptly picked off by senior pitcher Andy Sekelik.  First baseman Mike Schmidt followed with a long double to left center field but was stranded at second.  In the bottom of the first, senior LF Rob Dorsch walked to lead off, but was picked off first by a strong throw from catcher Jim DelDuca.  Junior second baseman Tyler Haak and Butler followed with walks, but pitcher Matt Charlton was able to strike out both 1B Adam Dobies and DH Bob Kohl to end the threat.

The top of the second was a nightmare for the Tigers.  After one out, LF Eric Morrison drew a walk.  DH John Sciullo's ground ball was booted by shortstop John Quimby and there were two on.  After a wild pitch moved both runners up, Sekelic struck out DelDuca, and it looked like the Tigers were going to get out of the inning.  Second baseman Jerry Obiecunas, the number nine hitter in the BP lineup, then lined a double into the gap in left center field to score a pair of runs.  Shortstop Jason Pape reached on an error, and Sekelik walked the next three batters to force in a run.  Coach Tim Banner then went to his bullpen, bringing in junior Eric Leuthold.  Right fielder Jeff Koller lifted a long fly ball to right field that senior Clint Karcher could not handle.  Two runs scored, but 3B Matt Petronsky was thrown out at the plate on a good throw from relay man Haak.  Six unearned runs in the inning gave Bethel Park a commanding 6-0 lead.

The Tigers came back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second.  Duffett led off with a single and Karcher hit a long double into left center field.  With senior 3B Mark Senge batting, Coach Banner called the suicide squeeze and Senge responded with a good bunt to get the first NA run across.  Quimby's bid for a base hit was taken away by a diving stop by Petronsky who threw to first for the out.  Karcher scored on the play and it was a 6-2 Bethel lead after two innings.

Bethel added another run in the top of the third on Obiecunas' second hit to make it 7-2.   Left hander Justin Granger came on to pitch for the Blackhawks in the bottom of the inning and kept the Tigers off the board despite Butler's base hit and a walk to Kohl.  After a scoreless fourth inning, Bethel Park came back with three runs in the top of the fifth.  Four straight hits, including doubles by Obiecunas and Schmidt,  accounted for the runs as BP took a 10-2 lead into the bottom of the fifth.  The Tigers picked up a run in the bottom of the inning.  After Haak reached on an error, Butler hit a long double off the fence in right field.  After two outs, Duffett hit a line drive to left field to score Haak and make it 10-3 after five innings.

The Blackhawks continued to add runs to their total as they picked up two more in the top of the sixth.  RBI singles by Obiecunas and Pape increased the Bethel lead to 12-3.  NA came back with a three-spot in the bottom of the inning.  After Senge was hit by a pitch, Quimby reached base on an error.  Dorsch's ground ball scored Senge, and Haak followed with a single to left.  With two outs, Dobies hit a long double to deep right center field, scoring both runners to make it a 12-6 game after six innings.

Bethel Park finished the scoring with three more runs in the top of the seventh.  Koller hit a long home run over the left field fence with one out.  A wild pitch and Obiecunas' fifth hit of the game accounted for the other two tallies.  In the bottom of the inning, Senge doubled to left center field with two outs, but the Tigers could not score.  Bethel Park came away with a big 15-6 victory.

The loss knocked the Tigers out of the PIAA playoffs and ended their season.  For his efforts at the plate, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Andrew Duffett as the Player of the Game.  Bethel Park will advance to the second round of the PIAA playoffs and will meet State College on Thursday.

The loss was a tough way to end an outstanding season for the Tigers.  NA won the WPIAL championship after finishing undefeated in section play for the first time in school history.  Coach Banner's team finished with a record of 20 wins and 5 losses.

CONGRATULATIONS TO COACH TIM BANNER AND THE TIGERS FOR AN OUTSTANDING SEASON!!!!!

TIGERS CRUSH SHALER, 9-1, TO CAPTURE WPIAL CROWN

Box Score

Senior pitcher Adam Dobies allowed only two hits and an unearned run as he led the Tigers to a 9-1 victory over Shaler in the WPIAL Championship game at PNC Park on Thursday night.  Senior right fielder Clint Karcher had a double, two singles and two RBIs while senior left fielder Rob Dorsch banged out three singles and scored two runs for the victorious Tigers.

The Tigers started quickly in the top of the first inning, thanks to a little help from Shaler.  After Dorsch singled to right field to lead off, second baseman Tyler Haak's bunt was fielded by pitcher Chris Squeglia and thrown into center field.  After senior CF Matt Butler's slow ground ball to third moved both runners up a base, Squeglia struck out Dobies.  Senior first baseman Bob Kohl singled to deep short, scoring Dorsch with the game's first run.  Senior catcher Andrew Duffett followed with a single to left center field scoring Haak, and Karcher singled to left center to score Kohl to make it 3-0 after one half inning of play.

The three-run lead was all Dobies needed as he handled the Titans the rest of the way.  NA added another run in the top the third.  Karcher hit a line drive on one hop to the wall in right center field for a double after the first two Tigers were out.  After walks to senior 3B Mark Senge and sophomore shortstop John Quimby loaded the bases, Squeglia hit Dorsch with a pitch to drive in a run and make it 4-0.

Shaler came back with an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to 4-1.  After center fielder Nick Christy led off with a walk, shortstop Scott Miller singled to left field.  After Dobies got right fielder George Neiman on a fly ball to center field, catch David Sibenac hit a hard ground ball to short.  Quimby got a glove on it, but the ball rolled into short left field allowing Christy to score what was to be Shaler's only run of the game.  Senge turned a ground ball into an inning ending double play and the Tigers still maintained a three-run lead.

The Tigers knocked Squeglia from the mound in the top of the fifth inning.  Duffett led off with a single to left and senior Tim Rogers came in as a courtesy runner for Duffett.  Karcher followed with a base hit, and Shaler coach Bob Hinds went to the bullpen to bring in sophomore Brian Schwartzbauer.  Senge dropped down a sacrifice bunt, but Schwartzbauer threw wildly past first base allowing Rogers to score the fifth NA run.  NA took a 5-1 lead into the bottom of the fifth.

In the top of the sixth inning, NA added two more runs.  After Butler led off with a single up the middle, Dobies hit a long drive to left center field.  The ball hit halfway up the wall, allowing Butler to score and Dobies to move into second base on a double.  With two outs, Senge singled to right field to score another run and the Tigers led, 7-1, going into the bottom of the sixth inning.

The Tigers scored two more runs in the top of the seventh.  After Dorsch lined a single to left field for his third hit, Haak sacrificed him to second.  With two outs, Dobies was intentionally walked.  Kohl followed with a single to center field to score Dorsch, and a wild pitch scored sophomore Mike Juliano, who was running for Dobies.  NA took a commanding 9-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh.

Dobies finished things by striking out the last two batters he faced, and the Tigers had claimed the 2003 WPIAL Class AAA championship.  For his efforts on the mound, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Adam Dobies as the Player of the Game.  The championship was the fourth title for NA and the first since 1996. The Tigers will face Bethel Park in the first round of the PIAA Playoffs on Monday.  We will post the site and time as soon as we receive the info.

KOHL'S HOME RUN LEADS TIGERS OVER PETERS TOWNSHIP, 6-2

Box Score

Senior first baseman Bob Kohl hit a long home run over the left field fence to break a 2-2 tie as the Tigers went on to defeat Peters Township, 6-2, in the WPIAL semifinals at Chippewa Park on Friday afternoon.  Senior RF Clint Karcher hit a two-run double in the top of the sixth inning to add a pair of insurance runs for the Tigers.  Senior Adam Dobies went the distance, allowing only five hits, to earn the victory.

The Tigers got on the board early thanks to some shoddy fielding by the Indians.  After senior LF Rob Dorsch hit a 3-2 pitch to left field for a base hit to open the game, junior Tyler Haak grounded to short.  The throw to second was dropped, and NA had runners on at first and second with no outs.  Senior center fielder Matt Butler followed with a ground ball to short.  The Indians got the out at second, but the throw to first was low and got away.  Dorsch came into to score and Butler raced all the way to third.  With two outs, Butler stole home to give NA a 2-0 lead after one-half inning.

In the bottom of the first after retiring the first two batters, Peters Township pitcher Jim Gallagher legged out a double into short right field.  After shortstop Dave Meldrum was hit by a pitch, first baseman Aaron Janusey hit a single to center field.  Gallagher tried to score, but Butler's perfect throw from center field to senior catcher Andrew Duffett nailed the Indian runner to retire the side.

The Indians rallied in the bottom of the third inning to tie the score.  Second baseman Sean Karpen singled to deep short to lead off the inning.  Right fielder Eric Rich drilled a home run over the right field fence to tie the game at 2-2.  Dobies then ran into control problems.  After walking Meldrum and Janusey flied out to center field, the Tiger right hander hit catcher Mark Meucci and walked DH Anthony Rossi.  With the bases loaded, Dobies got third baseman Jared Robison to fly out to Butler to end the threat.

With two outs in the top of the fourth, Kohl came through with the long home run over the left field fence to give NA the lead for good.  It was only the second Tiger hit of the game but NA took a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the fourth.  From this point on, Dobies would not allow another base hit.

In the bottom of the fifth, a diving catch by sophomore shortstop John Quimby robbed Meldrum of a hit to lead off the inning.  Dobies followed by getting Janusey on a ground ball and Rossi on a fly to center.  The Tigers added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the sixth.  With one out, Dobies beat out a ground ball to deep short.  Rossi replaced Gallagher on the mound and got the second out on a strikeout.  Duffett drew a walk to put runners on first and second.  With courtesy runner Tim Rogers on second and Mike Juliano on first, Karcher drove the ball deep to left center field.  The ball hit high on the wall driving in both runners as Karcher pulled into second with a standup double.  The Tigers took a 5-2 lead after five and one-half innings.

Dobies continued to keep the Indians off the board in the middle innings, retiring ten of twelve batters at one point.  In the top of the seventh, the Tigers picked up an additional insurance tally.  Quimby led off with a double just inside the third base line.  After two were out, Butler brought him home with a line drive single to left field.  In the bottom of the seventh, Dobies retired the side in order, and the Tigers were ready to go to the championship game at PNC Park with a 6-2 victory.

It was a team victory for NA, but Butler put his stamp on the game with his outstanding play.  For his efforts, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Matt Butler as the Player of the Game.  Dobies earned his seventh win against only one loss, allowing only five hits while striking out three.  The Tigers will meet neighborhood rival Shaler, a 7-5 winner of Bethel Park, in the WPIAL final at PNC Park on Thursday at 7:00 pm.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning at 6:45 with the pre-game show.

SEKELIK'S ONE-HITTER LEADS TIGERS TO SEMIFINALS

Box Score

Senior left hander Andy Sekelic hurled a one-hitter against Central Catholic in the WPIAL Quarterfinals at Matulevic Field in Shaler on Wednesday afternoon as the Tigers pounded the Vikings, 12-1.  Seniors Adam Dobies and Matt Butler each hit a three-run home run as the Tigers scored six in the top of the first and never looked back.  Sekelic struck out nine in picking up his fifth win of the season against just one loss.

The Tigers jumped off to a great start in the top of the first.  Senior LF Rob Dorsch led off with a line drive single to left center field.  After Dorsch stole second, a ground out by junior second baseman Tyler Haak moved him to third.  Butler walked and immediately stole second.  Dobies followed with a towering blast over the left field wall just to the left of the scoreboard, and the Tigers had a quick 3-0 lead.  After a second out, senior pitcher Adam Lyons could not find the plate.  Walks to senior catcher Andrew Duffett and senior RF Clint Karcher put a pair of runners on base.  When shortstop Jim Hyland did not come up with senior third baseman Mark Senge's ground ball, courtesy runner Tim Rogers scored.  Karcher made it to third when the throw was in the dirt.  After Lyons walked sophomore shortstop John Quimby, Central went to the bullpen.  Sophomore right hander Buddy Skeels came in to pitch with the bases loaded and two outs.  Skeels walked both Dorsch and Haak forcing in two more runs, giving the Tigers a 6-0 lead after one half inning.

In the bottom of the first inning, Central scored their lone run.  With two outs, Hyland singled up the middle for what was to be the only Viking hit.  After a balk, the first of three called in the game, moved Hyland to second, right fielder Zak Koeske's ground ball was misplayed allowing the run to score.  After one, the Tigers had a commanding 6-1 advantage.

The Tigers were unable to increase the lead until the fourth inning.  Butler led off with a single to left field and stole second base before Dobies followed with a walk.  With senior DH Bob Kohl batting, Butler stole third, his third stolen base of the game.  Coach Tim Banner then went to the suicide squeeze with Duffett at the plate, and the Tiger catcher dropped down a good bunt allowing Butler to score the seventh NA run.  Karcher was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and third.  Senge came through with a long double to left center field scoring both runs and giving the Tigers a 9-1 lead halfway through the game.

Sekelik continued to dominate the Central hitters in the middle innings, and at one point retired eleven of twelve batters faced.  In the top of the seventh inning, the Tigers tacked on the final three runs.  Senge singled to right field to open the frame but Skeels got the next two batters of fly outs.  After Haak walked, Butler hit a 3-2 pitch over the fence in left center field to wrap up the second straight 12-run performance in the playoffs.  Sekelik retired the Vikings in the bottom of the seventh without giving up a hit, and NA was off to the semifinals.

With the win, the Tigers improved the overall record to 18-4 but more importantly set up a semifinal contest with Peters Township, also a 12-1 winner over Mt. Lebanon in the quarterfinals.  For his outstanding pitching performance, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected Andy Sekelik as the Player of the Game.  The Tigers will meet Peters Township in the semifinals in a game that will be played tomorrow at 2:00 pm at Pullman Park in Butler.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 1:45 pm.

DOBIES HITS, PITCHES TIGERS TO WIN OVER NORWIN, 12-3

Senior right hander Adam Dobies allowed only one run on two hits while striking out fifteen over six innings as the Tigers dominated the Norwin Knights, 12-3, in the first round of the WPIAL Playoffs at Pullman Park in Butler on Monday night.  Dobies hit a two-run homer and a double as the Tigers pounded out 12 hits on their way to their 17th win of the season against four losses.

Norwin won the toss and was the "home" team, but the Tigers got on the board first.  In the bottom of the first inning, senior left fielder Rob Dorsch lined the first pitch of the game into the right center field gap for a double.  Junior 2B Tyler Haak followed with a two-strike single to right field to score Dorsch and give NA a 1-0 lead after one inning.  Dobies struck out five in the first two innings as the Tigers held the one-run advantage.

In the top of the third, NA added a second run.  With two outs and courtesy runner Tim Rogers at second, senior first baseman Bob Kohl hit a long drive to the fence in right field good for a run-scoring triple.  Dobies struck out the side in the bottom of the third, and NA took a 2-0 lead into the fourth inning.

In the top of the fourth, senior right fielder Clint Karcher singled to lead of the inning.  Senior 3B Mark Senge bunted to move Karcher up a base, but catcher Mark Woleslagle's throw to second base went into center field allowing Karcher to go to third.  Sophomore shortstop John Quimby lifted a sacrifice fly to left scoring Karcher with the third NA run.  Two wild pitches moved Senge to third where he came home on Haak's ground ball.  Dobies walked two batters in the bottom of the fourth but came back to strike out Kris Schneider and Josh Loutzenheiser to keep the Tiger lead at 4-0 after four innings.

In the top of the fifth, the Tigers added another pair of runs.  Kohl singled to left and senior catcher Andrew Duffett followed with a base hit to right.  After a wild pitch moved the runners up a base, Senge dropped down a perfect bunt along the third base line.  Kohl scored as Senge beat the throw to first for an infield single.  Kris Schneider came in to pitch for Norwin in place of starter Tim Reynolds.  Quimby's fielders choice brought courtesy runner Mike Juliano home with the sixth Tiger run.  In the bottom of the fifth, Dobies struck out three more batters to bring his total to thirteen.  NA took a 6-0 lead into the sixth inning.

In the top of the sixth, Haak picked up his second hit of the game on a hard ground ball single up the middle.  After one out, Dobies hit a long drive over the fence just to the left of the 370 mark in left center field, and the Tiger lead increased to 8-0.  Dobies took a no-hitter into the bottom of the sixth and retired the first two batters.  After Dobies got the first two strikes on pinch-hitter Phil Corrie, the Norwin senior hit a line drive single over second base for the first Knight hit.  Schneider then hit a long drive into right-center field for a triple, scoring Corrie and cutting the lead to 8-1.  Dobies struck out Loutzenheiser to retire the side with his fifteenth K of the night.

The Tigers scored four more runs in the top of the seventh, thanks to some shoddy fielding by Norwin.  Relief pitcher Chris Holzer walked three, Norwin committed two errors, and Dobies hit a long double to left center field as NA put the game out of reach, 12-1, going into the bottom of the seventh.  Sophomore right hander Justin Stark came in to finish things up for Coach Tim Banner.  Stark allowed two runs and two hits, but did strike out the side as the Tiger pitchers recorded a total of 18 strikeouts for the game.

For his efforts on the mound and at the plate, the North Allegheny Sports Network chose Adam Dobies as the Player of the Game.  The win moves the Tigers into the quarterfinals of the WPIAL tournament against Central Catholic, a 4-2 winner over West Allegheny.  The Tigers will play Central at Shaler tomorrow at 4:00 pm.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 3:50 pm.

LATE RALLY BEATS NORTH HILLS, 3-2; TIGERS FINISH UNBEATEN IN SECTION PLAY

Box Score

A two-run rally in the bottom of the sixth inning gave the Tigers a 3-2 win over North Hills at the Senior High field on Thursday afternoon.  A home run by winning pitcher Adam Dobies tied the game, and a two-out, two-strike single by junior second baseman Tyler Haak drove home the winning run.  Senior center fielder Matt Butler homered for the Tigers earlier.

North Hills took an early lead with an unearned run in the first inning.  Center fielder Dustin Mills led off with a double down the right field line.  After one out, shortstop Denny DiPasquale singled to center field with Mills moving to third.  After second baseman Steve Long struck out, DiPasquale stole second, but the throw to second base was not played by the Tigers and Mills scored as the ball rolled into center field.

In the bottom of the first with two outs, Butler smacked his fifth home run of the season, a blast just inside the left field foul pole to tie the game at 1-1.  The Indians came back in the top of the second to regain the lead.  Catch Damien Hawkins led off with a single to right field.  After 3B Bryan Wienand sacrificed pinch runner Steve Linden to second, left fielder Derek Martin doubled deep down the left field line to score Linden and give NH a 2-1 advantage.

Neither team was able to score again until the sixth inning.  Dobies settled in after the second inning and allowed only one hit over the last five innings.  The Tigers had several opportunities to tie the score or take the lead but could not capitalize on the chances.  In the bottom of the third, two walks and a hit batsman loaded the bases with two outs, but senior 1B Bob Kohl's long fly ball to left field was caught for the third out.  In the bottom of the fifth inning, senior left fielder Rob Dorsch lined a double into the left center field gap with out out, but Indian pitcher Eric Nachreiner got the next two batters to get out of the jam.

The Tigers finally broke through in the bottom of the sixth.  Dobies led off the inning with a long home run to deep left center field to tie the score at 2-2.  Kohl drew a walk and sophomore John Quimby went in to run.  After senior catcher Andrew Duffett sacrificed Quimby to second, senior RF Clint Karcher grounded out to second base, moving Quimby to third.  With two strikes, Haak came through with a line drive to left field that dropped in front of LF Derek Martin as Quimby scored the go ahead run.

In the top of the seventh inning, Dobies got the side one-two-three, striking out Nachreiner to end the game.  Dobies allowed only five hits and struck out nine in earning his fifth victory against only one loss.  The North Allegheny Sports Network named Adam Dobies the Player of the Game for his efforts.

The win completed the Tiger section record without a loss, the first time in NA history that the feat has been accomplished.  With the section mark at 8-0, the overall record improved to 15-3 as the Tigers await the pairings for the WPIAL Playoffs which start next week.  The North Allegheny Sports Network is planning to broadcast Tiger playoff games.  Stay tuned!!!

WPIAL BASEBALL - 2003

The Tigers will compete again in Class AAA, along with 43 other teams this year.  All section winners and runners-up will participate in WPIAL championship play at the completion of the regular season competition.  Ties in section records for first place will not be broken and those tied for first place in section record will be declared co-champions and those teams will constitute the section qualifiers.  Playoff status for first place ties will be determined by head to head competition.  Ties for second place will be broken in the same manner unless that also ends in a tie.  If a tie for second place persists after head to head competition is applied, both teams will enter the playoffs.  Multiple ties will be broken in the following manner:

a.  Section won-lost records of all the tied teams will be compiled.
b.  The team with the best numerical record among the tied teams will enter post-season play.
c.  If the tie cannot clearly be broken, all will enter post-season play.

The four WPIAL AAA semi-finalists will represent the WPIAL in PIAA inter-district play and the place in the state bracket will be determined on a follow-the-winner basis.

Postponed games must be played in order of postponement and scheduled on the first common open date.  Make up WPIAL section games must have preference over  exhibition games, JV, and junior high games.  All games postponed during the first half of the season must be rescheduled and played prior to the beginning of the second half (April 18.)

During all WPIAL competition, any game that is interrupted by bad weather prior to becoming a legal game will be resumed at that point and concluded on the next available playing date.

The Ten Run Rule, ending a game after 4 1/2 or 5 innings will be in effect for all regular and post season play.  Additionally, the fifteen run rule, ending a game after 3 innings, will be in effect as well.
