File Photo by Al Durick, Portraits Plus Studios HERBERT DROPS PAIR AT PIAA CHAMPIONSHIPS Senior Zach Herbert was defeated by Stefan Tighe of Cathedral Prep, 7-5, in the quarterfinals of the heavyweight class in the PIAA tournament on Friday in Hershey. Herbert was then eliminated from the competition by Matt Snyder of Northampton, 7-6, in the second round of consolations. HERBERT WINS, ADVANCES TO QUARTERFINALS Senior heavyweight Zach Herbert defeated Joe D'Orsie of Dallastown, 5-0, in first round action on Thursday at the Giant Center in Hershey to advance to the quarterfinals of the PIAA Class AAA tournament. Herbert will face Stefan Tighe of Cathedral Prep this afternoon. Action in the quarterfinals is slated to get under way at 1:30 pm. PIAA CLASS AAA

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * HERBERT CLAIMS SILVER AT WPIAL/SOUTHWEST REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS Tiger senior heavyweight Zach Herbert won the silver medal at the WPIAL/Southwest Regional Championships at Canon-McMillan High School on Saturday. Herbert defeated Andrew Joseph of Kiski Area, 4-2, in the semifinals. In the championship match, Adam McKnight of Chartiers Valley pinned Herbert at 1:33 of the first round. By finishing second, the Tiger senior qualified for the PIAA tournament to be held at Hershey this weekend. In the 145 pound weight class, freshman Rob Waltko lost two close matches to finish in 4th place. In the semifinals, Waltko was defeated by #1 seed Mike Catalano of Canon-McMillan, 4-0. Waltko defeated Dave Kapetanovich of North Hills, 6-2, to advance to the the consolation final. In the battle for third place, Waltko was defeated by Jacob Zeoli of Greensburg Salem, 3-0. In second round consolation action, junior Rob Cawley was eliminated when he dropped a 3-0 decision to Brendon Cutnese of Avonworth. At 171, Rick Haarbauer of Baldwin pinned senior Matt Territ. The PIAA Championships will be held at the Giant Center in Hershey on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * WALTKO, HERBERT ADVANCE TO SEMIFINALS Senior Zach Herbert at heavyweight and freshman Rob Waltko at 145 were victorious in the semifinals on Friday night at the WPIAL/Southwest Regional at Canon-McMillan High School to advance to the semifinals. Herbert won a major decision, 13-3, over Matt Shine of Upper St. Clair while Waltko edged Anthony McCorvey of Baldwin, 5-4. At 112, junior Rob Cawley dropped a 5-2 decision to Spencer Kahrig of Trinity. In the semifinals this morning, Waltko will take on top seed Mike Catalano of Canon-McMillan while Herbert will wrestle Andrew Joseph of Kiski Area. In the first consolation round, senior Matt Territ pinned Ramy Nubani of Upper St. Clair to move on to the second round this morning. Territ and Cawley are still alive in the consolation round. At 103, freshman Steve Sabreen was defeated by Ryan McGarity of Pine-Richland, 3-0. Both senior Jason Damon at 152 and junior R.J. Parks at 189 were unable to wrestle and had to forfeit. The semifinal round and second round consolations will get under way this morning at 10:30 am. The finals will begin at 5:30 pm this evening. NSN Sports will broadcast the entire day of wrestling LIVE on the internet. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * HERBERT, CAWLEY, WALTKO ADVANCE TO QUARTERFINALS Three Tiger wrestlers won first round matches at Canon-McMillan High School on Thursday night to advance to the quarterfinal round of the WPIAL/Southwest Regional tournament. Senior Zach Herbert at heavyweight, junior Rob Cawley at 112, and freshman Rob Waltko at 145 all were victorious in their first matches. Herbert pinned Chris Alexander of Valley at the 3:15 mark to move on to tonight's quarterfinal match against Matt Shine of Upper St. Clair. In the 112 pound weight class, Cawley won a 5-3 decision over Greg Greco of Keystone Oaks. Cawley will meet top seed Spencer Kahrig of Trinity in the quarterfinals. Waltko posted an 8-1 victory over Addison Scherich of McGuffey to advance to a meeting tonight with Anthony McCorvey of Baldwin. At 103, freshman Steve Sabreen major decisioned Zachary Bell of Belle Vernon, 14-0, in the preliminary round before falling to Kalvin Schultz of Trinity, 9-0, in the first round. Devin Geisler of Upper St. Clair edged Brody O'Connell, 4-1, in the 140 pound preliminaries. At 152, senior Jason Damon had to give up an injury decision to Scott Black of Fox Chapel at the 1:05 mark. At 171, Brandon Phillips of Waynesburg pinned senior Matt Territ with just 11 seconds left in the match. Junior R.J. Parks lost a 13-2 major decision to Jeremiah Ditmar of Uniontown. The tournament continues tomorrow with two sessions at 10:30 am and 5:30 pm. The top three wrestlers in each weight class will advance to the PIAA championships at Hershey beginning next Thursday at Hershey's Giant Center. Listed below are the preliminary and first round opponents for the NA wrestlers: * * * * * * * * * * * * * * FOUR TIGERS CAPTURE SECTION CROWNS The Tigers won four section titles and eight NA wrestlers qualified for the Class AAA Southwest Regional Championships at Canon-McMillan on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Junior Rob Cawley at 112, freshman Rob Waltko at 145, senior Matt Territ at 171 and senior heavyweight Zach Herbert all were crowned section champions at Shaler on Saturday. Cawley won a 3-0 decision over Steve Fleming of Shaler to pick up gold at 112. At 145, Waltko outpointed Brady Krebs of Hampton to capture first place while senior Matt Territ picked up a 13-6 win over Dave Zukowski of Hampton to earn first place honors. At heavyweight, Herbert outlasted Adam Pritts of Butler for a 2-1 decision and the gold medal. Senior Jason Damon finished second at 152 and junior R.J. Parks won the silver at 189 to qualify for the next round. Freshman Steve Sabreen at 103 and senior Brody O'Connell at 140 both took third to move on to the next round. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * WPIAL WRESTLING - 2003-04 The Tigers will compete again in Class AAA this year along with 52 other teams. Playoff entry for the 2003-04 WPIAL team championships will include the teams that finish in the top three (3) places in each Class AAA section. It two teams tie for the last qualifying spot, the winner of the match played between them will enter the team tournament. A three-way tie will be broken by comparing the head-to-head competition between the tied teams that may result in one of the teams demonstrating a higher cumulative total of victories. The tiebreaker applies only to section records. The WPIAL individual championships will begin with a sectional tournament. In class AAA, sectionals will be held in a one-day format. In Class AAA, the top three (3) place winners from each sectional tournament will advance to the WPIAL/Southwest Regional tournament from which three (3) wrestlers will advance to the state tournament. Wrestle-back competition will be included from the first round of Sectionals, WPIAL and Regional Championships. The tie-breaker system used in post-season play will be applied to all regular season matches between WPIAL teams if they end in a tie score. If ties occur, the following criteria shall be followed to break the tie. They are listed in order of priority. The winner shall be: 1. The team who has been
penalized the least number of team points for flagrant or unsportsmanlike
conduct. A random draw of weight classes will be used in all dual meets and team tournaments. CLASS AAA - 53 TEAMS
