File Photo by Al Durick, Portraits Plus Studio PIAA CHAMPIONSHIPS COMPLETED ON SATURDAY The girls' 400 meter relay team picked up the only points of the day as they finished in 8th place in the PIAA Class AAA Championships at McCoy Natatorium at Penn State on Saturday. Juniors Kim Jenkins and Katie Belardi, along with sophomore Kathy Faingold and senior Kelly Battle, swam to an All-American qualifying time with a season best performance. In the team competition, the NA girls' team finished in sixteenth place. The top WPIAL teams were Mt. Lebanon in seventh and Seneca Valley in 8th. In the boys' competition, NA completed the meet in a tie for 29th place. The top WPIAL team was Butler in 11th place. On Saturday, Jenkins came in 16th in the 100 free prelims and did not qualify for the final while senior Emily Tong was 21st in the 100 backstroke. Sophomore Kathy Faingold finished 19th in the 100 breaststroke prelims. Senior Scott Shearer was 14th in the 500 freestyle preliminaries and failed to qualify for the finals. The boys' 400 free relay team was 19th in the preliminaries. Shearer anchored both the 200 and 400 free relays to lifetime bests. CONGRATULATIONS TO BOTH TEAMS FOR UNDEFEATED DUAL MEET SEASONS AND TERRIFIC POST SEASON SWIMS! * * * * * * * * * * * * * JENKINS TAKES 6TH IN 200 FREESTYLE AT PIAA FINALS Junior Kim Jenkins captured 6th place in the finals of the 200 freestyle at the PIAA Swimming Championships at McCoy Natatorium on Friday. Senior Scott Shearer took 8th in the 200 free to earn the highest NA placing for the boys' team. Shearer swam a personal best in the race. The girls' team is in 15th place while the boys are 23rd. In the 200 medley relay, the NA team of seniors Emily Tong and Kelly Battle, along with junior Katie Belardi and sophomore Kathy Faingold, finished in 11th place. Battle recorded a 10th place in the 200 IM while Belardi was ninth in the 100 butterfly with a lifetime best swim. In the 400 free relay, the boys' team of seniors Chris Arthur and Scott Shearer, freshman Rob Meyers and junior Jeff Glick took ninth with a lifetime best swim. The girls' squad of junior Tara Thompson, Jenkins, Faingold and Battle posted an 11th place finish. The final five events will be contested today, following the same time schedule as Friday. Events on today's program include: 100 yard freestyle, 500 yard freestyle, 100 yard backstroke, 100 yard breaststroke, and the 400 yard freestyle relay for both girls and boys. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * KUHN FINISHES IN 16TH PLACE IN PIAA FINALS Sophomore Matt Kuhn advanced to the semifinals in the Class AAA diving competition and finished in 16th place on Thursday at the McCoy Natatorium at Penn State. Josh Bonner of Ridley won the gold with WPIAL champion Kevan Phillips of Gateway in sixth place. PIAA CLASS AAA
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * LADY TIGERS TAKE WPIAL TITLE FOR SECOND STRAIGHT YEAR Coach Corky Semler's Lady Tigers scored 183 points to win the WPIAL Championship at Trees Pool on Friday for the second consecutive year. NA finished 17 points ahead of second-place Seneca Valley with Mt. Lebanon a distant third at 152. On the second day of competition, NA was led by junior Kim Jenkins, who took second in the 100 freestyle. Senior Emily Tong won bronze in the 100 backstroke while sophomore Kathy Faingold was fourth and senior Kelly Battle fifth in the 100 breaststroke. The 400 free relay team captured third to wrap up the title. In boys' competition, the Tigers finished in 6th place. On Friday, senior Scott Shearer was second in the 500 freestyle, his second silver medal of the meet. Senior Chris Arthur was sixth in the 100 backstroke, and the 400 free relay team finished in 5th place and qualified for the PIAA finals. Central Catholic won the championship for the second straight year. The PIAA Championships will be held at the McCoy Natatorium on the campus of Pennsylvania State University on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, March 11-13. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * LADY TIGERS LEAD AFTER FIRST DAY The Lady Tigers hold a slim lead at the WPIAL Championships after one day of competition at Trees Pool on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh. Junior Kim Jenkins took gold in the 200 freestyle while senior Kelly Battle was second in the 200 IM to pace NA. Senior Scott Shearer captured second in the 200 freestyle to lead the boys' team. The girls' team posted a total of 108 points to 102 for second-place Seneca Valley. Bethel Park is a close third with 100.5. Junior Katie Belardi won the bronze in the 100 butterfly while sophomore Kathy Faingold placed fourth in the 200 individual medley. Good races by the Tiger relay teams added points to the NA total. In the 200 medley relay, the Lady Tigers came in third while the 200 free team finished second behind Seneca Valley. Shearer's second and a second place finish by the 200 free relay team put the boys' team within striking distance with a full day of competition ahead. NA is currently in sixth place with 60 points with Gateway leading with 110. Defending champion Central Catholic is in second with 98 points. Competition will get under way this afternoon at 3:30 pm at Trees Pool. Once again, the NSN Sports Network will broadcast the meet LIVE on the internet. * * * * * * * * * * * * * KUHN FINISHES 6th, QUALIFIES FOR PIAA FINALS Sophomore Matt Kuhn finished in 6th place in the WPIAL Diving Championships at Pine-Richland High School on Saturday. Kuhn will represent NA at the PIAA diving finals to be held on March 11 at the McCoy Natatorium at Penn State. Kevan Phillips of Gateway won the WPIAL title. Tiger sophomore Tyler Rosenberger was 17th while junior Matt Verlinich came in 22nd. In the girls' diving finals, junior Alex DeFazio finished in the ninth position in the standings. The top six qualify for states. Sophomore Claire MacKay finished in 13th place, missing the final cut by just .03 points. Lindsay Davis of Bethel Park was the WPIAL champion. WPIAL CLASS AAA DIVING

The Top 6 Qualify for the PIAA Finals * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TIGER TEAMS WRAP UP SECTION TITLES WITH WINS OVER SENECA VALLEY Coach Corky Semler's Tiger teams defeated Seneca Valley on Thursday night at the Senior High pool to complete undefeated seasons and capture section championships. The boys drowned the Raiders, 109-59, while the Lady Tigers prevailed, 102-84. The boys' section title marked the 14th consecutive year that the Tigers have captured the crown. For the Lady Tigers, it was the second straight section title. The girls' meet came down to the last event, the 400 freestyle relay, and the Lady Tigers came through with the victory and the section title. Swimming for the victorious relay squad were Kim Jenkins, Tara Thompson, Katie Belardi, and Kathy Faingold. Junior diver Alex DeFazio won the 1 meter diving, with sophomore Claire MacKay second, to get NA off to a good start. Junior Kim Jenkins won two close races in the 200 and 100 freestyle events. Junior Katie Belardi came from behind to win the 100 butterfly, while senior Emily Tong took the 100 backstroke to put the Lady Tigers in a position to win. Freshman Crissy Stack qualified for the WPIALs in the 100 backstroke. Sophomore Kathy Faingold won both the 200 IM and the 100 breaststroke while junior Tara Thompson picked a second in the 500 free, a third in the 200 free and swam on the winning 400 free relay team. Both junior Andrea White in the 50 free and sophomore Emilie Homa in the 500 free picked up third place points for the section champs. Senior captains Scott Shearer and Chris Arthur won their events to lead the boys' team to the title. Shearer won the 200 free, was second in the 100 free while swimming on the winning 200 free relay team. Arthur captured the 100 back and swam on both winning Tiger relay squads. Sophomore Peter Cai won gold in the 200 IM while sophomore Kevin Gasperich won the grueling 500 freestyle race. The Tigers piled up six second place finishes to help the Tigers to victory. In the 200 free, sophomore Andrew Shepard earned second while in the 200 IM, freshman Jose Rodriguez took the silver. Freshman Rob Meyers was busy again as he took second in the 50 free and swam on the winning 200 medley team. Junior Dan Crooks took a second in the 100 fly and third in the 50 free while junior Jeff Glick was second in both the 500 free and the 100 back. Sophomore Matt Kuhn finished second in the diving competition. Adding third place points were three additional swimmers. In the 200 free, sophomore Patrick Kirsch was third, freshman Brandon Smith captured third in the 100 fly, in addition to helping both relay squads to victory, and freshman Matt Scherer added third place points in the 100 free. In diving, sophomore Tyler Rosenberger scored a lifetime best score in joining the "200" club to take the gold. Sophomore Stephen Hilty qualified for the WPIAL in the 100 freestyle (relay leadoff) and freshman Rob Meyers qualified in the 100 breaststroke. Click here for photos from the NA-Seneca Valley meet! (Thanks to Coach Semler for the information in this report!) * * * * * * * * * * * * * * WPIAL BOYS/GIRLS SWIMMING - 2003-04 The Tigers will compete in Class AAA once again, with 33 other teams in both the boys' and girls' alignment. The WPIAL individual diving championships will be held on February 13-14, 2004. The swimming championship events will be held on February 20-21, 2004, at the University of Pittsburgh Trees Pool. The PIAA State Championship will be at Penn State University on March 11-12-13, 2004. Section champions will be determined by the best won/lost record in section play. In the case of a tie, head to head results will be the tiebreaker. National Federation scoring system will be in effect. That system scores 6-4-3-2-1, while relay scoring will be 8-4-2 in a six-lane pool. WPIAL QUALIFYING STANDARDS A. Teams must have a minimum of 11 competitions (swimming and/or diving) prior to the WPIAL meet, to be eligible to score points at the WPIAL or PIAA championships. B. Individuals must have been in uniform and available at 75% of the team contests to be eligible for post-season competition. C. Swimming - in order to qualify for the WPIAL championship event at Pitt, all swimmers must achieve the minimum standards established by the WPIAL. These standards must have been met in a WPIAL meet or in an individual qualifying meet that uses an electronic timing device. Standards are available on the WPIAL website. D. Diving - in order to qualify for the WPIAL diving competition, all divers must meet the minimum standards that appear on the WPIAL website. BOYS SWIMMING ALIGNMENT CLASS AAA - 34 TEAMS
