SECOND HALF RALLY BY STATE COLLEGE DOWNS LADY TIGERS, 51-42

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

The Lady Tigers led for three quarters, but it was not enough as State College came back to defeat NA, 51-42, in the first round of the PIAA playoffs at Steel Valley High School on Friday night.  Senior Molly Friel had 13 points while junior Stephanie Wolf added 10 to pace NA.  Senior Monika Foglesanger dropped in 13 to lead the Lady Little Lions.

State College grabbed an early first quarter lead on a basket by senior Amber Yearick and a three by senior point guard Carly Onkotz.  A steal and a layup by Friel and a basket from underneath by Wolf cut the lead to 5-4.  Friel added two more hoops to put NA on top 8-5.  After junior point guard Laura Casey made one of two from the line, Foglesanger banked in a layup to cut the lead to 9-7.  Junior Rachel Divosevic dropped in a baseline jumper but Onkotz answered with her second trey to cut the lead to  11-10 at the 2:59 mark.  Friel scored again to put NA on top, 13-10.  After Foglesanger made one of two from the stripe,  hoops by Divosevic and Wolf pushed the margin to 17-11.  After Foglesanger scored from underneath, junior Nicole Dudas hit a jumper from the right side just before the buzzer to give NA a 19-13 advantage after one period.

The Tigers continued to play well in the second quarter.  Senior Juliet Nellis connected from just inside the arc to make it 21-13.  After Hannah Laman-Maharg hit one of two free throws, Wolf scored to push the lead to 23-14.  Laman-Maharg dropped in two more foul shots before Friel scored her ninth and tenth points of the half to push the margin to 25-16.  Casey's foul shot gave NA a double-digit lead before senior Jessie Serafin scored a pair of field goals to cut the margin to 26-20 with 3:45 remaining in the half.  Junior Cara Davies drained a long trey before Onkotz drove for a layup.  Wolf's hoop pushed the lead to 31-22 before Onkotz scored again on a drive.  Senior Megan Mather's long triple with just 3.5 seconds remaining gave NA a 34-24 advantage at the intermission.

Both teams had trouble scoring in the third quarter.  Foglesanger was able to drop in two baskets to cut the lead to 34-28 at the 5:18 mark.  Friel came back to hit a trey from the left corner to push the margin back to 37-28.  Davies followed with another trey at the 4:02 mark to give NA its biggest lead at 40-28.  State College coach Bethany Irwin called a time out and decided to switch to a man-to-man defense.  NA would score only two points in the remainder of the game.  Senior Sarah O'Shea hit a long three to cut the lead to 40-31, and junior Kelly Ashcraft made three of four foul shots as State College narrowed the margin to 40-34.  Foglesanger's short banker with just 12 seconds remaining brought SC to within four, 40-36, after three quarters of play.

The Lady Tigers could not get anything to fall in the fourth quarter as they made only one of twelve shots.  With NA's cold shooting, State College was able to grab the lead but not without a struggle.  Serafin scored to cut the lead to 40-38 at the 6:52 mark, and O'Shea's driving layup tied the game at 40-40 with 5:22 on the clock.  Serafin's trey gave the Lady Little Lions the lead for good, 43-40, at the 3:00 mark.  State College slowed the pace of the game and NA was forced to foul.  The Lions made 9 of 15 free throws to push the margin to 51-40 before Wolf was finally able to drive for a layup with just one second left.  State College picked up a 51-42 victory and advanced to the quarterfinals.

For the Lady Tigers, it was a frustrating second half.  After shooting at a 50% clip (15-30) in the first half, NA made only three of 21 shots in the second half.  In addition, the Lady Tigers turned the ball over nine times in the second half.  NA was 0-4 from the foul line in the final two quarters as nothing seemed to work for Coach Paul Seneca's squad.

On the season, the Lady Tigers compiled a 21-7 record, winning the Section 3 championship.  NA will lose two senior starters, and two seniors off the bench next season, but return a number of players who had significant playing time.  For her efforts in her last game for the Lady Tigers, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected Molly Friel as the Player of the Game.

OAKLAND CATHOLIC EDGES LADY TIGERS, 51-46, IN PLAYOFF THRILLER

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

The Lady Tigers battled defending PIAA Champion Oakland Catholic to the wire on Tuesday night at Northgate High School, but came up a few points short as the Eagles won, 51-46.  Junior Cara Davies scored 12 points and senior Megan Mather added 10 lead NA.

Davies got NA off to a good start when she drained a trey on the first shot of the game just 23 seconds into the contest.  Junior Stephanie Wolf scored a minute later as the Lady Tigers took a 5-0 lead.  Sophomore Aysha Jones answered with a three to spark a 7-point Eagle run.  Davies hit a pair of jumpers to put NA back on top, 9-7, at the 3:53 mark.  After 6-0 junior Eve Pyle scored from under the hoop, it was Davies again giving the Tigers an 11-9 advantage.  Pyle's rebound tied the score, but senior Molly Friel dropped in one of two from the line as the Lady Tigers took a 12-11 lead after one quarter.

Pyle continued to play tough under the basket and her putback gave OC a 13-12 advantage early in the second quarter.  Wolf's jumper put the Tigers back ahead, but Jones answered with a driving layup to make it 15-14 in favor of the Eagles.  Sophomore Rachel Divosevic dropped in her first basket of the game as NA regained the lead, 16-15.  After Friel's foul shot, Jones got loose again on a drive to tie the game at 17-17.  Jones put OC ahead with a short banker, but junior Michelle Yakelis hit a baseline jumper to tie the game at 19-19.  The Eagles then went on a 7-2 run to close out the half.  A foul shot by senior Amanda Polk and a basket by Pyle pushed the lead to 22-19 before Mather's first basket cut the advantage to 22-21.  After Jones scored, junior Sarah Bucar hit a jumper with 8 seconds remaining as the Eagles took a 26-21 lead into the intermission.

In the third quarter, Davies started the scoring with a trey to cut the margin to two at 26-24.  Jones answered with a driving layup, but Divosevic hit a short banker to reduce the lead to two.  After Bucar hit a triple, Divosevic scored again to make it 31-28.  A foul shot by Pyle and a putback by Polk gave the Eagles a 34-28 lead at the 5:07 mark.  As was the case all night, the Lady Tigers would not quit as Mather hit a jumper and added a trey to cut the lead to 34-33.  Wolf gave NA the lead, 35-34, but sophomore Carmella Breslin answered with a triple to put OC back on top, 37-35.  Friel's foul shot with 35 seconds left closed out the third quarter scoring as the Eagles held a 37-36 advantage going into the final period.

Pyle got loose under the basket to give OC a 39-36 lead just 17 seconds into the fourth quarter.  Divosevic and Jones exchanged hoops as the Eagles kept the three-point lead at 41-38.  Wolf cut the lead to one at the 5:18 mark as both teams slowed the pace of the game.  After a number of misses, Mather drained a trey to give the Tigers a 43-41 advantage with 3:38 left.  Bucar came back to hit a triple and freshman Vickery Lauro banked in a short jumper to put OC back ahead, 46-43, with 2:56 remaining.  Pyle made one of two from the stripe to push the lead to 47-43.  With both teams pressing, neither team could get a good shot at the basket until junior Laura Casey hit a trey from the right side to cut the deficit to 47-46 with only 1:09 left.  The Eagles were forced to call a timeout because of the NA pressure.  On the ensuing inbounds pass, Wolf came up with ball.  The Tigers had a chance for the lead but a costly turnover gave the ball back to Oakland with 40 seconds remaining.  Pyle was able to put back a rebound to increase the lead to 49-46.  Once again, the Lady Tigers turned the ball over, and Pyle scored with a second left to give the Eagles a hard-fought 51-46 win.

The Lady Tigers shot well from the field, hitting 19 of 36, a 52.8% clip.  The Eagles made 21 of 43 (48.8%), but the big difference was on the boards.  Pyle had 16 points, all from under the basket.  Both teams protected the ball in the first half, but in the second half, pressure defense caused 8 OC turnovers, and 9 by NA.  Foul shooting was not a major factor.

It was a great effort by the Lady Tigers.  Playing without injured senior and starter Jessie Lang, NA got great play from a number of players.  Both Davies and Mather, the two leading scorers for NA in the game, have not been starters.  Wolf and Divosevic both had eight points and played good floor games.  For her efforts, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Cara Davies as the Player of the Game.

The loss dropped the overall record to 21-6 on the season.  The Lady Tigers have qualified for the PIAA tournament.  Placing in the tournament will depend on Oakland Catholic.  If the Eagles win in the final, NA will be the #3 seed from District 7.  If the Eagles lose, the Lady Tigers will be #4.  The North Allegheny Sports Network plans on following the Lady Tigers in the PIAA playoffs.  Stay tuned!

MONTOUR FALLS TO NA, 56-42, IN WPIAL QUARTERFINALS

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

The Lady Tigers built an early lead and held off Montour in the second half as they earned a 56-42 victory in the WPIAL Quarterfinals at Chartiers Valley on Friday night.  Sophomore Rachel Divosevic and junior Stephanie Wolf shared scoring honors with 14 points each.  Senior Samantha Woznichak led Montour with 17 points.

The Tigers built a 16-8 lead after the first quarter.  Junior Laura Casey had five points and Wolf added four more as the Lady Tigers scored the final five points of the quarter.  In the second quarter, NA increased the margin.  Divosevic came alive, scoring three baskets with Wolf scoring four more points.  Senior Jessie Lang hit a trey, senior Molly Friel banked in a short jumper, and Casey scored on a driving layup as the Lady Tigers took a 33-20 advantage to the intermission.

The Spartans turned up the defensive pressure in the third quarter to close the gap to 11.  Woznichak was able to get loose for a pair of field goals, 6-0 junior Haley Gaidosh and freshman Jordan Burkes adding hoops.  NA was able to score only three field goals in the quarter with Friel, Divosevic, and junior Michelle Yakelis scoring.  NA took a 42-31 lead into the final period.

In the fourth quarter, Montour was able to cut the lead to nine at 42-33 with a basket by Gaidosh.  That was as close as the Spartans would get as NA converted from the foul line when they needed it.  The Lady Tigers made 10 of 11 foul shots to secure a 56-42 victory.

With the win, the Lady Tigers advanced to the semifinals next week.  NA will play the winner of the Oakland Catholic-Trinity game on Saturday afternoon.  The place of the game, date, and time will be announced next week.  We will post the information when we receive it.

LADY TIGERS STYMIE SALEM, 49-30, TO ADVANCE TO QUARTERFINALS

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

Coach Paul Seneca's Lady Tigers used a suffocating man-to-man defense to shut down the Greensburg Salem Lions, 49-30, on Tuesday night at Plum High School in the opening round of the WPIAL Playoffs.  Sophomore Rachel Divosevic dropped in 16 points to lead NA with senior Jessie Lang adding 13.  Senior Molly Friel held Salem's leading scorer, Laura Klimchock, to just six points, well below her season average of over 19 points per game.

The Lady Tigers wasted no time in taking control of the contest.  Forcing numerous turnovers, NA quickly built a 12-2 lead.  Lang scored two early baskets to put the Tigers ahead, 4-0, just 1:23 into the game.  After Klimchock scored to make it 4-2, Divosevic got loose in the paint for a pair of jump shots to push the advantage to 8-2.  Friel added a pair of foul shots and junior Stephanie Wolf hit a jumper to increase the NA advantage to 12-2 at the 4:36 mark.  After a Salem timeout, senior Shanell Morris scored from under the basket, but NA answered when junior Laura Casey banked in a long trey.  Freshman Rachael Roddy dropped in a rebound of her own shot to make it 15-6, but Lang hit a trey from the left side to push the margin to 18-6.  After senior Alesha Ferrett dropped in a triple, junior Michelle Yakelis banked in a short jumper to give the Lady Tigers a 20-9 advantage after the first quarter of play.

In the second quarter, Klimchock put back a rebound to cut the lead to 20-11, just 36 seconds into the period.  NA then hit three quick baskets as Divosevic, Casey and Wolf all scored to push the lead to 26-11.  After another Lion timeout, Morris dropped in a pair of shots from close in to cut the lead to 26-15.  Coach Seneca stopped play with a 30-second timeout, and the Lady Tigers responded.  Wolf scored on a layup and Divosevic added two more jump shots in the paint to push the lead back to fifteen at 30-15.  After Ferrett scored, it was Divosevic again as NA took a commanding 32-17 advantage to the intermission.

In the third quarter, it was the Lady Tiger defense that continued to control the game.  Salem was limited to just two foul shots by Klimchock in the entire quarter.  NA had trouble scoring also as they missed numerous shots from under the basket.  After Klimchock cut the lead to 32-19, it took the Tigers until the 4:27 mark before Divosevic finally scored on a layup.  Lang's basket and two free throws were the only other points scored in the period as NA took a 38-19 lead into the final period.

Both teams substituted liberally in the fourth quarter.  Coach Seneca used all fifteen players in the game as the Lady Tigers rolled to the easy win.  Lang started the scoring with a basket, and after a Lion free throw, Divosevic upped the NA lead to 42-20 with a hoop.  Roddy made one of two from the line and freshman Mary Cook drained a trey to cut the lead to 42-24.  Divosevic and Klimchock traded baskets to keep the margin at eighteen.  After Yakelis hit a short jumper to make it 46-26, the Lions made three foul shots.  Junior Nicole Dudas answered with one of two from the stripe before Ferrett also hit one of two foul shots.  Junior Mallory Skarupa's putback at the buzzer put the finishing touch on a 49-30 Lady Tiger victory.

Defense was the name of the game for NA as they forced Salem into 33 turnovers, three more than the 30 points scored by the Lions.  Klimchock was held to just nine total points, ten below her average.  In the first half, the Lions were held to just 18 shots.  For her overall efforts, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Jessie Lang as the Player of the Game.

The win advances NA to the quarterfinal round where they will play Montour, a 70-58 victor over McKeesport.  The Spartans had a great start for the season going 17-1, but late season problems dropped their record to 19-5.  Montour tied for second place in Section 5.

McDOWELL HOLDS ON TO DEFEAT LADY TIGERS, 68-57

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

The McDowell Trojans from Erie jumped on NA in the first quarter and held on to defeat the Lady Tigers, 68-57, at the Senior High gym on Monday night.  Junior Stephanie Wolf led NA with 15 points while sophomore Rachel Divosevic had 14 and senior Jess Lang 10.  Sophomore Nicole Ross paced the Trojans with 15 points.

McDowell scored the first six points of the game to take a 6-0 lead just 1:56 into the contest.  Sophomore point guard Melissa Kuhar scored on two driving layups and Ross hit a jumper during the run.  Wolf hit a jump shot to cut the lead to 6-2, but the Trojans went on another run of eight straight points.  A three by junior Corry Merriman, a hoop by Ross, and another trey by Merriman pushed the lead to 14-2.  Junior Laura Casey hit a triple and Lang dropped in one of two from the line to cut the margin to 14-6.  McDowell answered, however, with two baskets by junior Lauren Sesler and a hoop by junior Hannah Koenig to give the Trojans a commanding 20-6 advantage after one quarter.

The Tigers came back in the second quarter to knock off some of the lead.  Divosevic got loose in the paint for a short jumper to cut the lead to 20-8 and Wolf's basket cut the margin to 20-10.  McDowell answered with three of four foul shots before Divosevic scored again to make it 23-12.  Wolf's basket got the margin back to nine, but Kuhar matched the hoop with one of her own pushing the lead back to 25-14.  Wolf scored again, but Sesler put back a rebound to keep the lead at eleven.  Lang's two foul shots cut to nine again, but McDowell responded, as they would do all night long, as senior Jillian Green scored her first two points to push the margin back to 29-18.  Ross scored from the baseline, but Wolf came back with her first trey of the season to make it 31-21.  After Koenig scored, junior Cara Davies hit a long triple just before the buzzer, cutting the Trojan advantage to 33-24 at the intermission.

In the third quarter, the Lady Tigers came out aggressively and forced McDowell into a number of turnovers.  After Lang made one of two foul shots, Merriman stepped back and hit a triple to push the lead to 38-25.  A hoop by Divosevic and a foul shot by Davies cut the lead to 38-28.  NA had chances to cut further into the lead, but were unable to score.  Junior Vickie Innis dropped in two foul shots,  but a foul shot by Davies and another jumper by Divosevic cut the lead to 40-31.  After Innis scored on a put back, Lang hit a jumper and a foul shot to cut the lead to 42-34.  Once again, NA had chances but could not convert to get closer.  After Sesler dropped in a pair of foul shots, senior Molly Friel scored on a layup to make 44-36.  McDowell then put the game away with nine straight points.  Green hit a basket and two foul shots, Kuhar hit one of two from the stripe, Ross scored again and Green finished the run with two more foul shots.  Senior Megan Mather scored just before the end of the quarter, but McDowell had built a 53-38 advantage going into the final period.

The fourth quarter featured foul shooting for the second straight game.   The Lady Tigers continued to foul, looking for Trojan misses.  McDowell did make only 11 of 20 from the line in the fourth quarter, but the lead was too much to make up.  Lang started things off with a three, followed by a basket by Friel and a foul shot by Casey as NA crept back within nine at 53-44.  Ross' basket was matched by Wolf and the lead remained at nine with 4:29 left.  A three-point play by Kuhar was answered by a Friel basket, but NA still trailed by ten, 58-48.  Two foul shots by Ross and two more by junior Emily Evans pushed the margin to 62-48.  Divosevic got loose again for a short jumper, Kuhar made one of two from the stripe, and Divosevic scored again to cut the lead to 63-52.  Ross made two more foul shots before Divosevic scored her third basket of the quarter, but the lead remained at eleven.  Sesler hit a pair of free throws before Mather drained a trey to cut the lead to 67-57 with just 37.2 seconds remaining.  Kuhar added one final foul shot and McDowell raced back up I-79 with a 68-57 victory.

It was a frustrating night for the Lady Tigers.  After falling behind early, they continued to battle back but could never seem to get close enough to threaten the Trojans.  For her efforts, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected Stephanie Wolf as the Player of the Game.  The loss dropped the overall NA record to 19-5 for the season as they get ready for the WPIAL Playoffs later this week.

The WPIAL Basketball Committee will meet tonight at the Radisson Hotel in Greentree.  The pairings for the 2003-04 WPIAL tournament will be announced.  As soon as we find out who, what, and when concerning the Lady Tigers, we will post it on the website.  The North Allegheny Sports Network  is planning to broadcast the WPIAL contests involving the Lady Tigers.  Stay tuned!

In the third quarter, the scoring picked up.  Friel hit a quick hoop and Wolf scored again as NA increased the margin to 30-11 at the 6:34 mark.  North Hills came back with baskets by sophomore Jordan Zangaro and senior Tressa Koch to cut the lead in half at 30-15.  After Friel made one of two foul shots, Wargo scored to make it 31-17 with 5:00 left in the quarter.  Junior Kristin Tedesco and Divosevic traded foul shots before Alabek dropped in her second triple to cut the lead to 32-21.  Casey answered with a trey and Wolf scored to push the margin to 37-21 at with 3:16 left.  After Sieber scored for the Indians, senior Juliet Nellis got loose for a layup to make it 39-23.  After Megan Manjerovic put back a rebound, junior Nicole Dudas made a pair of foul shots.  Sieber's two foul shots with 2.3 seconds left closed out the scoring with NA leading 41-27 after three quarters.

Foul shots were the name of the game in the fourth quarter with 21 foul shots attempted by the two teams.  Wolf and Lang scored early to push the lead to 45-27 before Zangaro drained a trey.  Lang scored again to make it 47-30 before Tedesco made one of two from the line.  Casey hit two of three foul shots before Tedesco made one of two.  Wolf's three-point play pushed the lead to 52-32 with 3:56 left in the game.  A pair of foul shots by Lang were answered by two from Tedesco as the parade to the foul line continued.  After Tedesco made yet another foul shot, Friel got loose to score as NA took its biggest lead at 56-33.  A foul shot by Tedesco and a basket by sophomore Katie Manjerovic cut the lead to twenty.  Junior Kate Winland closed out the scoring with a long trey with just two seconds left to make the final score, 59-36.

The win gave NA a final section record of 11-1 and improved their overall mark to 19-4.  For their efforts on Senior Night, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected Jess Lang and Molly Friel as Co-Players of the Game.  The Lady Tigers will be at home on Monday to face Erie McDowell in a non-section contest.

WPIAL GIRLS' BASKETBALL - 2003-04

The Lady Tigers will once again compete in Class AAAA, along with 36 other teams in the 2003-04 season.  The top three teams and ties for third place will enter the team championships set to begin on February 13th through the 18th, 2004.  If two teams tie for third place but one of the teams has won both head to head contests, that team will enter the tournament round.  Three way or multiple ties will be broken in the following manner:

1.  The cumulative won-lost records of all tied teams will be totaled.
2.  The team that has the best numerical record among the tied teams will enter post-season play.
3.  If the tie cannot clearly be broken, all will enter post-season play.

The WPIAL will qualify 10 teams from AAAA in the PIAA State Tournament.  PIAA bracket placement will be determined on a "Follow the winner" basis.
