SHALER BOMBS NA, 66-46, IN SECTION FINALE

Section 3-AAAA Champion Shaler used long distance shooting to down the Tigers, 66-46, at Shaler on Saturday night.  The Titans connected on ten three-pointers in winning their eighth straight.  Junior Andrew Krewatch led the Tigers with 20 points, while Nick Sefscik had 20 for Shaler.

The Tigers stayed close in the first half, trailing 15-11 at the end of the first quarter and 26-20 at the intermission.  Shaler broke the game open in the third quarter as they raced off to a 47-32 advantage going into the final period.

The loss gave NA a final section mark of 6-6, good for a 4th place tie.  The overall Tiger record stands at 11-11 with one game to play.  For the second consecutive year, the Tigers will finish in fourth place, just one game out of the playoffs.

TIGERS DESTROY NORTH HILLS, 67-28, BUT FAIL TO MAKE PLAYOFFS

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

The Tigers put together an impressive performance on Senior Night as they defeated North Hills, 67-28, at the Senior High gym on Friday night.  Senior Luke Brungo had 22 to lead the Tigers in scoring, while senior E.J. Kusnyer dropped in 17, including four triples.  With wins by New Castle and Pine-Richland, however, the Tigers were eliminated from the WPIAL Playoffs.

North Hills got on the board first when junior Caleb Dorman put in a rebound, but Brungo hit a driving layup to tie the score at 2-2.  Brungo added another hoop and a foul shot to put NA ahead, 5-2, at the 5:00 minute mark.  The Indians answered with baskets by sophomore Andy Monahan and Dorman to regain the advantage at 6-5.  Senior Chris Huber hit a long trey, but senior David Yokitis gave NH the lead back at 9-8.  Brungo scored again but so did Dorman, and the Indians led, 11-10.  After Dorman made one of two from the line, Brungo's fourth hoop of the quarter tied the game at 12-12.   Junior Andrew Krewatch dropped in one of two foul shots, and Brungo hit two from the stripe to give NA the lead for good at 15-12.  After junior Dexter Bertram put in a rebound, junior Tim Crouch closed out the first quarter scoring with a hoop from down low as the Tigers led, 17-14, after one period.

Crouch hit one of two from the line to begin the second quarter scoring, but Bertram dropped in a short banker to cut it to 18-16.  Dorman picked up his third foul and sat out the remainder of the half.  Crouch got loose underneath for a basket, and Kusnyer drained a long trey to increase the margin to 23-16.  Bertram scored again, but the Tigers scored the last nine points of the quarter.   Sophomore Ryan Tiesi hit a short baseline jumper, Brungo scored on a drive, and Huber drained his second trey to push the lead to 30-18 with 42 seconds remaining in the half.  Krewatch's basket with 21 seconds left closed out the first half scoring, and NA took a 32-18 lead at the intermission.

The Tigers dominated the third quarter.  After Tiesi made one of two free throws, Crouch scored to make it 35-18.  Kusnyer's second triple gave NA its first twenty-point lead at 38-18 with 6:23 still remaining in the period.  Dorman dropped in a rebound, but Brungo answered with a pair of hoops to push the lead to 42-20.  After Dorman made one of two from the line, Kusnyer scored on a driving layup, converted the foul shot, and the lead went to 45-21.  With the game out of reach, North Hills was called for a technical foul.  Kusnyer hit both foul shots and then drained a trey to push the margin to 50-21.  Kusnyer then hit another three-pointer before sophomore Josh Trocchio answered with a trey to make it 53-24.  Junior Mark Langhans scored with just seconds remaining, and NA took a commanding 55-24 lead into the final period.

Because the Tigers were ahead by 30 or more points, the mercy rule was invoked in the fourth quarter.  With the clock running, NA continued to shoot well.  After Dorman scored, Krewatch answered and Kusnyer drained his fourth trey of the game as the lead ballooned to 60-26.  Huber and Brungo scored before the seniors left the game to a standing ovation from the NA crowd.  Sophomore Dan Lavallee picked up where Kusnyer left off and hit a long trey to puts the score to 67-26.  Sophomore Brian Miller scored the final hoop of the game for the Indians, but NA had won big, 67-28.

The win improved the NA record to 6-5 in section play, 11-10 overall.  For his fine play, senior Luke Brungo was selected by the North Allegheny Sports Network as the Player of the Game.  As was mentioned before, wins by New Castle and Pine-Richland eliminated the Tigers from the WPIAL playoffs.  The Tigers will close out the season tonight when they visit Shaler.   The Titans defeated the Tigers, 61-45, at NA earlier in the season.  Game times tonight will be 6:00 for the JV game and 7:30 pm for the varsity contest.

CENTRAL CONTROLS NA, 65-58

The Tigers dropped a 65-58 decision to Central Catholic on Friday night at Central.  Junior Andrew Krewatch scored 23 and senior Luke Brungo netted 18 to lead the Tigers.  Daniel Waajid tallied 22 to pace the Vikings.

NEW CASTLE NIPS TIGERS, 38-37

The New Castle Red Hurricanes edged the Tigers, 38-37, at the New Castle Fieldhouse on Wednesday night.  The Tigers had a chance to win but could not get off a shot at the end of the game.

The Tigers got off to a great start, leading 8-0 just 1:41 into the contest.  NA would only score five more points in the first half, however, as New Castle came back in the second quarter to take the lead.  After the Tigers held an 8-7 advantage after one period, the 'Canes outscored NA, 15-5, in the second to take a 22-13 advantage to the intermission.

The Tigers came back in the third quarter to cut the lead to 31-28 going into the final stanza.  NA was able to get a one-point lead twice in the final quarter, but could not make it hold up as New Castle won by a 38-37 score.

The loss dropped the NA section record to 5-5, the overall mark to 10-9.  The Tigers are not eliminated from a playoff spot, but now have to win the final two section games against Shaler and North Hills to have  a chance.  The Tigers will travel to Central Catholic tomorrow night to meet the #3 ranked Vikings in a 7:30 pm non-section contest.

TIGERS DROP TOUGH 44-41 DECISION TO PINE-RICHLAND

The Tigers continued to play good defense, but it was not enough on Friday night at Pine-Richland as the Rams came back to edge NA, 44-41, in Section 3 play.  Senior E.J. Kusnyer had 15 points and junior point guard Ryan Tiesi added 13 to pace the Tigers.  Alex Simmons scored 14 points for the Rams.

The Tigers led the game through the first three quarters.  At the end of one period, NA held an 8-5 lead.  P-R outscored NA by one point in the second quarter, but the Tigers still had a 19-17 advantage at the intermission.  NA extended the margin to 33-26 after three quarters, and it looked like the Tigers were in a good position to pick up an important win on the road.  The Rams came back, however, to outscore NA 18-8 in the final stanza to pull out the 44-41 victory.

The loss dropped the Tigers to 5-4 in section play and 10-8 overall.  NA is currently tied for fourth place with Butler and trails both New Castle and Pine-Richland by a game and first-place Shaler by three games.  The Tigers will remain on the road with a trip to New Castle set for next Tuesday.  New Castle (5-3, 12-7) has been playing well at home lately and currently are tied for second place.  Game time is scheduled for 7:30 pm at New Castle.

TIGERS CRUSH SENECA VALLEY, 59-25

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

The Tigers outscored Seneca Valley, 24-2, in the first quarter on their way to a convincing 59-25 victory over the Raiders at the Senior High gym on Tuesday night.  Senior guard Chris Huber scored 14 and senior forward Luke Brungo added 13 to lead the Tigers.  Senior George von Koschembahr tallied eight for the Raiders.

The Tigers wasted no time in taking control of the game as they scored the first ten points.  Huber got the Tigers off and running with a jumper to give NA a 2-0 lead.  Brungo followed with a hoop, sophomore point guard Ryan Tiesi hit two free throws, junior Tim Crouch scored from under the basket, and Huber scored again as the Tigers led 10-0 at the 3:47 mark.  Junior Jason Davis finally put the Raiders on the board, but the Tigers scored the next fourteen points to put the game out of reach early.  After Brungo hit a trey, Crouch converted a conventional three-point play to put NA ahead, 16-2.  Junior Andrew Krewatch dropped in a pair of foul shots and Brungo hit a jumper to make it 20-2.  Junior Doug Dzambo tipped in a rebound and Huber scored with 38 seconds remaining as the Tigers took the 24-2 lead after one quarter.

Early in the second quarter, the Tigers seemed to lose a little enthusiasm and the Raiders scored six straight points.  Sophomore David Monteleone hit two free throws, von Koschembahr added a jumper, and Davis banked one in to cut the lead to 24-8.  A 30-second timeout by Coach Rob Greenleaf put the Tigers back on track, and they scored the final 21 points of the quarter.  Brungo made two foul shots and a basket from down low to make it 28-8.  After Tiesi was one of two from the stripe, Huber scored again and Crouch hit two from the line to push it to 33-8.  Senior E.J. Kusnyer drained a long trey and Brungo's hoop pushed the Tiger lead to thirty, 38-8, at the 4:32 mark.  After Huber hit one of two foul shots, Kusnyer made two from the line to push the margin to 41-8.  Baskets by junior guard Brad Vlassich and Krewatch closed out the scoring, and the Tigers took an insurmountable 45-8 lead to the intermission.

The Tigers dominated the first half statistics.  The NA defense forced 15 Seneca turnovers.  The Tigers shot 13 for 42 (31.0 %) while holding the Raiders to just 3 of 17 (17.6%).  For the game, NA made 15 of 19 foul shots.

In the third quarter, it was more of the same.  After von Koschembahr opened the scoring with a triple from the corner, Huber hit a jumper to make it 47-11.  Huber added a trey and Kusnyer hit his second three-pointer to give NA a 53-11 lead at the 5:46 mark.  At this point, the mercy rule kicked in.  For the remainder of the game, the clock only stopped during time outs.  Junior Marshall Lee and junior Matt Steinbrink scored for the Raiders before Krewatch's jumper made it 57-15.  Steinbrink scored again, but Krewatch's put back pushed to lead to 59-17.  Von Koschembahr hit another trey to close out the third quarter scoring with NA ahead, 59-20.

With the clock running in the fourth quarter, Coach Greenleaf turned the period over to the reserves.  Seneca scored the only five points of the period with Lee and Kevin Mayberry scoring baskets and Dan Stanley adding a foul shot.  The Tigers won an easy 59-25 victory over Seneca.

The win was important for the Tigers in the battle for a playoff spot in Section 3.  The NA section record improved to 5-3 and put them in a second place tie with New Castle, a 54-36 winner over Pine-Richland on Tuesday night.  Shaler leads the section with 7-1 mark.  For his efforts, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Chris Huber as the Player of the Game.  The Tigers will travel to Pine-Richland on Friday night to meet the Rams as the Tigers continue to fight for a playoff berth.  Game time is set for 8:00 pm as part of a girl/boy doubleheader.

After senior Dan Steinhalls scored for the Foxes, junior Doug Dzambo hit a jump shot and senior Chris Huber drove for a layup to increase the lead to 18-7.  Brannigan scored on a runner before Dzambo hit one of two from the stripe to make it 19-9.  After the Tigers were hit with a technical foul, Fox Chapel got back in the game.  Urso made two of four from the line, but added a three-point play on the ensuing out of bounds play to cut the lead to19-14.  Sophomore Rob Tenenini hit a jumper and Brannigan scored again to bring the Foxes to within one, 19-18, at the 3:25 mark.  It would be the closest that Fox Chapel got for the remainder of the game.

The Tigers rallied to outscore FC, 12-2, to close out the half.  Junior Mark Langhans came off the bench to score on a layup, Brungo hit a banker, and sophomore Dino Johnson hit a short jumper to push the lead to 25-18.  After Brungo scored again, Brannigan hit another runner to cut the lead to 27-20.  Huber and Tiesi made two free throws each to give the Tigers a 31-20 lead at halftime.

The Tigers got off to a quick start in the third quarter.  Krewatch hit a jumper just 15 seconds in, but Davis answered to make it 33-22.  Brungo then took over the game with three straight baskets to push the advantage to 39-22 at the 6:02 mark forcing Fox Chapel coach Harry Jenkins to take a time out.  After Tenenini hit one of two from the stripe, Kusnyer drained his second trey of the game to push the lead to 42-23.  After Huber made two more from the line, Urso hit a trey to cut it to 44-26.  Brannigan dropped in two free throws, but Kusnyer answered with two foul shots while Krewatch made one of two.  Urso's basket cut the lead to 49-30 at the 3:02 mark, and Davis added another hoop to cut it to 49-32.  Brungo responded with his fourth basket of the quarter as the Tigers took a commanding 51-32 lead into the final stanza.

Early in the fourth quarter, Brannigan hit two long treys to cut the lead to 51-38, and NA Coach Rob Greenleaf called a time out.  The Tigers responded as Brungo and Tiesi scored to push the lead back to 55-38.  After Brannigan cut it to 55-40, Krewatch dropped in a jumper, and Tiesi made four straight foul shots to push the advantage to 61-40.  Both coaches cleared the benches in the final minutes.  After Krewatch scored, Johnson hit his second jumper of the game and Langhans closed out the scoring with a pair of free throws as the Tigers earned a 67-51 victory.

The win improved the NA overall record to 8-3 while Fox Chapel fell to 4-7.  For his outstanding play, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Luke Brungo as the Player of the Game.  The Tigers will be back in action again on Friday night when they travel to Upper St. Clair to meet the #2 ranked Panthers.  Game time is set for 7:30 pm in the non-section contest.  The Tigers returned home next Tuesday when they entertain Shaler in a section game.

WPIAL BOYS' BASKETBALL - 2003-04

The Tigers will once again compete in Class AAAA, along with 35 other teams in the 2003-04 season.  The top three teams and ties for third place will enter the team championships set to begin on February 13th through the 18th, 2004.  If two teams tie for third place but one of the teams has won both head to head contests, that team will enter the tournament round.  Three way or multiple ties will be broken in the following manner:

1.  The cumulative section won-lost records of all tied teams will be totaled.
2.  The team that has the best numerical record among the tied teams wil enter post-season play.
3.  If the tie cannot clearly be broken, all will enter post-season play.

The WPIAL will qualify 10 teams from AAAA in the PIAA State Tournament.  PIAA bracket placement will be determined on a "Follow the winner" basis.
