In October of 2001, the North Allegheny
Science Department submitted a formal curriculum review document to the
School Board. This document is a blueprint for success regarding
science education for the district. Ever since that time the science
staff has been actively promoting the realization of the recommendations
found in the review. The following department philosophy was developed
during the 2 year review process.
The central goal of
science education is for the student to acquire a scientific literacy
requiring understandings and habits of mind, that enable them to:
- Use and apply the language,
processes and systems of biological, physical, earth and space sciences
and mathematics, to solve problems, communicate ideas, and make informed
decisions.
- Use hands-on experience, discovery,
investigation, observation, and technology in a safe and supportive
environment.
- Reproduce, use and apply scientific
and mathematical knowledge, recognizing the fact that science,
mathematics, and technology are interdependent.
- Appreciate the historical context
of the development of science.
- Integrate science with other
disciplines.
- Develop communication skills in
order for students to explain and justify their work.
- Recognize and think out alternative
explanations of events and propose tradeoffs.
- Deal logically with problems that
involve evidence, numbers, patterns, and uncertainties.
- Become familiar with the natural
world, its environment, and recognize both its diversity and its unity.
- Demonstrate problem solving and
critical thinking skills, requiring both team and individual effort and
responsibility.
- Integrate newly acquired
information with the student's prior knowledge.
Students will develop an appreciation
of science, as having value in its relevance to the students' lives and
ambitions, giving them an understanding of its applicability to innovation,
economic development and employment, as well as a passion for lifelong
learning.
