            This course is designed to provide students with an opportunity to learn about the physical, mental/emotional, and social aspects of health.  An emphasis is placed on the importance of making healthy decisions that will lead to a higher quality of life.  Course information is presented in a practical manner incorporating current health trends and concerns.  Content areas will include: Personality, Stress, Mental Disorders, Relationships (bullying prevention), Nutrition, Weight Management, Personal Fitness, Non-infectious Disease, Human Growth and Development, A.I.D.S. and other STD’S, Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drugs, Personal Safety.

 

PHYSICAL EDUCATION                     No. 7509

        The mission of Physical Education is to facilitate students in improving their quality of life through regular physical activity.  This is done by using a student-centered approach while teaching the psychomotor, cognitive, and affective aspects of physical fitness and sport.  A heavy emphasis is placed on each student attaining a healthy level of personal physical fitness (cardio respiratory endurance, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, body composition, and agility) as well as demonstrating personal responsibility and cooperation in all areas of the curriculum.

        The curriculum includes a variety of team sports and individual activities.  The team sports may include omni kin ball, soccer, speedball, ultimate Frisbee, volleyball, football, basketball and softball.  The individual activities include pickle ball, strength training, and aerobic conditioning.

   

ADVANCED PHYSICAL FITNESS      No. 7409

     Full Year/Full Time

     Grades 9, 10                                    Credit 1.0

 

        This class may be scheduled in place of Course 7509 for 9th and 10th grades only. The class emphasizes cardio respiratory efficiency, muscular strength and muscular endurance. It is designed to enhance flexibility, help students understand body composition, develop positive attitudes and responsible habits. This physical fitness class is for those students that want to make a commitment to their physical well-being.

Must be combined with #7309 in Family & Consumer Science, Grades 9,10

 

Note:  This course may be selected in place of Physical Education course #7509.

       

        A course designed with body composition and exercise balance in mind.  This will permit students to realistically determine what they can expect to change through diet and exercise.  The course will be taught by both a Family and Consumer Sciences teacher and a Physical Education teacher.  This course will take an in-depth look at how the body works and what the body needs to make it function more efficiently.  It is designed for students to take a look at their personal nutritional requirements; how to make informed, healthy choices; and design a workout schedule that will best suit their goals.  The importance of proper nutrition and regular exercise to individual well being a will be stressed.

        Self-assessment will be done to evaluate each student's basic knowledge of nutrition and personal level of fitness.  Teacher assessment will emphasize the student's improvement on an individual basis at a rate that each person can handle and maintain.

        **Students will be assigned to Physical Education and F&CS during the same period on alternating days.

 

Criteria for Selection:  Teacher recommendation.

 

ADAPTIVE PHYSICAL EDUCATION No. 7209

     Full Year/Part Time

     Grades 9, 10, 11, 12                         Credit .5

 

        Adaptive Physical Education is similar to regular physical education classes except that class size is smaller to permit concentrated development in coordination, strength, flexibility and improved physical fitness.  Skills for individual and team sports will be adjusted to individual needs.

 

        Criteria for Selection:  Recommendation of teacher.

 

 

PHYSICAL EDUCATION                     No. 7401

     Full Year/Part Time

     Grades 11, 12                                  Credit .5

 

        The Physical Education class will use activities and lab work uncommon to the regular class room to develop a physically educated person. Responsible student behavior will be expected as instructors encourage students to develop individual skills, team work, improve muscular strength, explore new activities and experience being physically fit. Students will receive the entire curriculum as they rotate through predetermined activities over a two year period. Students will be scheduled into four  -nine week unit periods (rotated around their pre-tested swimming group). All other units can be any combination of weeks to make up a nine-week block.  Students will be required to pass swimming once a year.  Swimming will be a review of strokes and breathing, with major emphasis on safety in and around small craft, personal safety (use of PFD's) and prevention of hypothermia.  Students will be required to demonstrate buoyancy for a 25 minute period and pass a written swimming final.  Classes include daily warm-up/cool-down routines emphasizing jogging, flexibility and strength work (rope climbing and pull-ups for boys, chair-dips and pull-up trainer for girls, sit ups and push ups).  Team sports may include basketball, speedball and volleyball.  Individual activities may include badminton, aerobic step training/dance, cross-country skiing, tumbling, weight training, wall climbing, and tennis.  All students will experience cardiovascular fitness training through the use of pace running (target heart rate), distance running/jogging, walking, swimming laps, rope skipping and the use of stationary exercise bikes (9).  Students will be strength and aerobic fitness tested a minimum of three times per year.

 

PHYSICAL EDUCATION                     No. 7501

     Semester/Full Time

     Grades 11, 12                                  Credit .5

 

        Students taking physical education full time will have the same requirements as part-time students (#7401) but will complete these units during one semester.

 

     Criteria for Selection:  Students scheduled for Beattie Tech, Early graduation, Guidance Counselor recommendation.

 

LIFETIME ACTIVITIES                       No. 7502

     Semester/Full Time

     Grades 11, 12                                  Credit .5

 

        Lifetime Activities will introduce students to a variety of recreational activities.  Emphasis will be on skills needed for safe, successful participation.  Students will also examine the role fitness plays in recreation as well as environmental issues surrounding recreation.  Problem solving, leadership, and cooperative learning skills will be emphasized throughout the curriculum.  Equipment selection, proper use, care and maintenance will also be included in each topic area through a hands-on approach during class 'labs'.

        In addition, students will be required to participate in an outdoor, overnight experience or three day activities.
