A Flute Players Guide to Success – The Short Version
1. Check the end cap position/tightness with cleaning rod
2. Head joint/foot joint must connect smoothly with no play
B. Cleanliness
1. Body cleaned with jeweler’s rouge or instrument manufacturer polish
2. Use Q-Tips to clean around keys
C. Pad quality
1. Check for torn or frayed pads
2. Leaks
a. Individual pads may leak (use eyes, light, or feeler gauges)
b. Adjust pad seating (reseat or add)
c. Pads that must close together (adjust screws or feet)
d. Adjust screws
e. Check cork on feet
D. Check all bumpers and feet
E. Inspect all keys on foot joint (low C closes?)
F. Inspect all screws and springs
1. Replace rusted springs
2. Check for secure fit
G. Key Movement
1. Do all keys move freely and quietly?
2. Lazy keys could mean bent rod, lack of oil, or lack of spring tension
3. Bent keys? (Ab key)
H. Rods
I. Play in between keys and posts (swedging needed)
J. Rusted or dirty rods
II. Prevention
A. Keep flute clean (use soft, clean rag to polish daily)
1. HEAD JOINT!!
2. Use Q-Tips to clean in tough to reach key areas
B. Keep flute well oiled
1. Syringe or key oil dropper and Q-Tip
2. Work chromatically to insure all keys are oiled

C. Case with working latches!!
