N.A. String Program Grades 3-12.

VISION STATEMENT   

It is our vision that the North Allegheny community will understand what music education is and appreciate its significance.

Elementary String Program: (Grades 3-5)  

The string program at North Allegheny starts in elementary schools.  

There are 7 elementary schools at North Allegheny:

Peebles

            In the elementary school students learn the basic skills of playing a string instrument.  They may choose  the Violin, Viola, Cello or Bass.  The students will play in school twice a week on a pull-out schedule.  They will perform once in a half hour small group lesson consisting of 4-6 students and once in a 45 minute orchestra rehearsal with all students in the same grade level. 

Skills Covered:

bullet1. Acquire skills in listening, describing, reading, performing, and creating in order to promote aesthetic response.
bullet2. Acquire and apply musical knowledge.
bullet3. Take the initiative to select, understand, and appreciate music as an art form.
bullet4. Gain insights into many cultures and eras.
bullet5. Develop the ability to make qualitative judgments relative to music.

    Students can try-out for a string instrument at the end of their second grade year.  All students will receive a try-out form by mid may. 

Middle School String Program: (Grades 6-8)  

The middle school program is a scheduled class that student participate in every other day.    

There are three middle schools:

            Students will also have the opportunity to participate in large group instruction combining many classes during activity period.  Students will work on note names, articulations, positions, bowings, history,  and various other  techniques.

bullet3. Take the initiative to select, understand, and appreciate music as an art form.

High School String Program:  (Grades 9-12)  

The high school  is divided into 4 grade levels in two different schools:

North Allegheny Intermediate School

bullet

North Allegheny Senior High

            There are 157 students in the high school orchestra.  These students automatically participate in the Golden Strolling Strings.  They give many performances  a year  at various functions.   The students also compete once a year, and  have  traveled to Georgia, New York,  Toronto, Florida and Virginia and Chicago.
