Library Mission

The North Allegheny library program is designed to ensure that students and staff are effective users of ideas and information.

   Library Philosophy

The North Allegheny Library/Media Program is designed to ensure that all students and staff become effective users of ideas and information in the technology driven global community of the 21st century.  The school library provides access to information in all formats, functioning as an integral part of the total curriculum.  Students will develop an appreciation for literature, demonstrate effective information literacy skills, employ critical thinking skills, and access a variety of technological resources.  The school librarian, working collaboratively with teachers and others, provides instructional experiences while assuming a pivotal role in the learning process.

Students who successfully complete a comprehensive and effective student-centered library/media program will become :

  • Self-directed learners who select discriminately from a variety of resources, use systematic methods to retrieve and process information, and are motivated to take responsibility for their own learning.

  • Critical thinkers who judge quality and usefulness of resources, use pertinent and related information and employ successful information strategies as the basis for effective problem solving.

  • Effective communicators who cooperate with others to process valid information and ideas.

  • Contributing citizens who recognize and appreciate similarities and differences in diverse cultures and environments, and  recognize the importance of information in a democratic society.

  •  Active readers who have been exposed to many types of literature.

These beliefs are the foundation of the North Allegheny Library Department and reflect the tenets of Information Power: Mission and Goals of the School Library Media Program.
