Introduction to German A is a basic
skills course which builds confidence, awareness, understanding, and ability in
the language. Students learn basic grammar and vocabulary and the ability
to converse in German. German customs, schools, family life, geography,
videos and current events are studied. In addition, the similarities in
German and English are emphasized.
Criteria for selection
- No prerequisites. This course is offered at the Intermediate High
School. Senior
high students who wish to take this course will be bussed to the Intermediate
High School.
Introduction
to German B 5502
Full year/Full time
Grades 9, 10, 11, 12
Students strengthen their understanding of the German language and culture. Basic skills from Introduction to German A are further developed to provide students with a solid foundation in the target language. Conversation is stressed and some areas of concentration include using public transportation, ordering a meal in a restaurant, shopping, sports and travel.
Students who have completed two years of German are also invited to participate in the North Allegheny German Exchange Program. This is a three week homestay program in which students attend classes at a German high school and live with families in Hanover, Germany during the summer vacation.

Introduction
to German B 5503

Via an accelerated pace, students will be able to strengthen their understanding of German language and culture. Accomplished skills from the preliminary course will be further developed and reinforced, securing a strong foundation for continuance of the honor's sequence.

This course will allow students to apply basic skills learned in the Introduction to German B course to a more advanced level of proficiency. Here the stress is on practical usage of conversational German in familiar situations, while continuing to fortify listening, speaking, reading and writing aptitudes.

This course is designed to enhance the student's ability to communicate more freely in the target language while further developing listening, reading and writing competencies. More advanced literature is introduced, and analysis relative to these readings in the target language is paramount.

Intermediate German B provides the students with an opportunity to review and exercise the language skills studies in preliminary A and B courses. In addition, new and more complex grammatical structures are introduced allowing the students to communicate more freely in the target language. Here the conversational approach of language learning is stressed and cultural materials are supplementary.

Intermediate German B 5507

This course continues the development of the language skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Emphasis is on oral proficiency and composition. Classes are conducted in German and students are required to respond in the target language. The material in the course serves as an introduction to college language courses and affords the opportunity to review and strengthen the skills acquired in previous courses. Upon successful completion of this course, students are encouraged to take a college placement test or the College Board Achievement Test.

The AP German Language Course uses the language for active communication. The objectives of the course include developing a strong command of vocabulary and structure; understanding spoken German; reading newspaper and magazine articles; contemporary fiction, and non-technical writings; and expressing ideas orally and in writing accurately and fluently.
