CONTEMPORARY FASHIONS The Contemporary Fashions class created a display window in the high school foyer called “A Show of Fashion”. Each student designed a display showing clothing for an event of their choosing. They designed the backgrounds and brought in necessary props.
FASHION ARTS Students in the Fashion Art class designed and made machine embroidered and quilted placemats to adorn one of the kitchens at Ronald McDonald House.
Real Care Parenting Program by Realityworks, Inc. NASH students in the FCS Child Development Course are anxiously waiting for their weekend with a newborn baby simulator. Students have prepared for the experience by analyzing the roles and responsibilities of parenting, speculating on the knowledge, skills, attitudes and situational factors that influence the ability to parent, and examine personal readiness for meeting the needs of children. Thanks to the North Allegheny Foundation we are fortunate to have our students using the newest and most realistic infant simulator available. This program helps students explore the physical, emotional, social, and financial consequences of nurturing children. The simulator will cry according to its 24 hour schedule, and require the student to provide care for it. The student responds by bring an electronic ID near Baby so Baby can recognize its guardian and then determine what kind of care Baby needs. Baby needs to be fed, burped, rocked, and have its diaper changed. Baby will also cry if it is roughly handled, held in a position it does not like, or if the head is not properly supported. There are also happy and fussy times. This authentic task allows students to temporarily experience the amount of care an infant requires. The data downloaded from Baby provides the instructor with measurable feedback on the student’s performance in the role of parent/guardian. Students will be taking Baby home for the first time during the month of November. Preparations are currently taking place: sign-up times, parent/guardian permission slip, student agreement forms, and performance demonstrations. We will follow up this report with individual photos and student comments as the simulations are completed. Thanks for the opportunity to give our students these valuable hands on learning experiences that will help them plan and succeed in their future.
