The purpose of this information is to keep the NA community informed and updated on Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and using an AED.  While it is our greatest hope that we will never have to use these procedures and equipment, we must also live by the credo "always prepared".  For if you can save a persons life, than the time and resources spent on this project are worth it.   Specific information on the techniques of CPR and AED use are taken from the American Heart Association's Heartsaver AED for the Lay Rescuer and First Responder.   A copy of this manual is found in each school's health office.

AED Building Locations

Every building in the district has at least one AED including the Baierl Center for Excellence and the Transportation Department.  Posters are located throughout each building to identify specific locations.   Be sure to make notice of these posters and locations so that you are

"Always Prepared"!

And the answer to the above questions are.......

1.    False.  If a victim is coughing loudly, you should stand by and let the victim cough.  If you are worried about the victim's breathing, phone your emergency number. 

2.    AEach breath should last for 1 second each.  Watch for the chest rise as you give each breath.  Breaths are very important for infant who are not breathing or do not respond.  you r breaths give an infant oxygen when the infant cannot breathe on his own.  You will not have to give as large a breath to an infant as you give to a child or an adult. 

3.   B.   You must "clear" the victim before the AED analyzes the victim's heart rhythm or gives a shock dose to the victim.  Do a visual inspection at the same time you are verbally stating the words "I'm CLEAR, everybody CLEAR" before you press the shock button.

Performing Adult CPR with an Automatic External Defibrillator

Follow the steps below for an instant refresher

 

Determine unresponsiveness.  If unresponsive.....

  • and you are alone, Phone 911, get the AED and return to the victim.
  • If you are not alone, call for help, direct someone to call 911 and direct another to get the AED. 

 

A - Open the Airway with the head tilt - chin lift

B - Check for Breathing/ Movement........ place your face, cheek side down next to the victims face.  Your eyes should be looking towards the victim's chest.

  look to see if the chest rises
  listen for air movement
  feel for breaths on your cheek

If the victim is not breathing, provide quick breaths (about 1 second each)

  • be sure the chest rises with each breath
  • if the chest does not rise, reopen the airway and try again

 

C - Circulation  - Remove clothing from the front of the chest and perform chest compressions
  • compress lower half of the sternum at the nipple line 1 1/2 to 2 inches
  • compress at a rate of about 100 times per minute
  • give 30 compressions to two rescue breaths
  • after 5 cycles or about two minutes, check for signs of circulation

 

D.  Defibrillate

     When the AED is brought to the site........ Power on the AED

 

 

     Attach the AED pads to the  victim's bare chest. 

     Follow electrode diagram for placement location.

 

Follow AED instructions........."clear" victim while the AED checks rhythm

If a shockable rhythm......"clear" victim and push the shock button if the AED tells you to.  Be certain to do a visual inspection around the victim to make certain all bystanders are clear before pressing the shock button.

  If no shock advised by the AED, continue CPR until rescue personnel arrive.

If victim has a pulse and is breathing, place in the recovery position and leave electrodes in place.
