"Great Expectations...The Best Is Yet to Come!"

        The Growing Child

Pennsylvania has, as a part of the School Code, mandated that every child every year have height, weight, and vision screened.  This screening now includes the calculation of the child's Body Mass Index or BMI and the BMI percentile.

The BMI is a weight for stature index that can be used to help determine whether the student is within a normal growth pattern, overweight, or underweight.  Many factors such as sports participation or family history can influence height and weight in children.  BMI should be considered a screening tool and not a definitive measure of your child's health.  Your child's Health Care Provider is the best person to evaluate these measurements.

Yearly, you will receive a Health Report Card that provides you with your child's vision screening results, and the height, weight, BMI, and BMI %.  There is no specific timetable for when these letters will be sent as the screening schedule is different for each school.

  • For the secondary students, the letters will be mailed home directly to you.
  • For the elementary child, the letter will come home in the Thursday envelope.

If at any time you have a questions about this information, please do not hesitate to contact your school nurse.  To find out who that may be, click on the nursing schedule link and scroll down to the school listing.
