Patricia P. Green, Ph.D.
   Superintendent of North Allegheny School District

On Wednesday, May 22, 2002, the Board of School Directors of the North Allegheny School District named Patricia Pataky Green, Ph.D., to the position of Superintendent of Schools. Dr. Green’s appointment was the culmination of an extensive, five-month national search conducted by the Board of School Directors.

"The North Allegheny School District is delighted to welcome Dr. Green as our new Superintendent of Schools," stated Mrs. Maureen Grosheider, School Board President. "She is truly an outstanding leader with a distinctive and multi-faceted record of accomplishment in education. Furthermore, we are convinced that she has the skills and insights that can propel this District forward with vision and focus toward our strategic goal of becoming one the Top 100 School Districts in America."

The Board awarded Dr. Green with a four-year contract effective July 1, 2002.

Dr. Green holds a B.S. degree in Elementary Education from the University of Maryland, an M.Ed. from the University of Maryland’s Institute for Child Study in Human Development Education, and a Ph.D. in Educational Administration form the University of Maryland’s Department of Educational Policy, Planning and Administration. She has demonstrated success on a national, state and local level in the areas of instructional leadership, administrative and organizational management, instructional improvement, and social and emotional development.

Dr. Green’s most recent position was that of Acting Deputy Superintendent for Instruction for the Prince George’s County Public Schools, a district of 134,000 students in Maryland. She has been with that district since 1971 and has also held the positions of Classroom Teacher, Elementary Instructional Administrative Specialist, Principal, Area Assistant Superintendent, and Associate Superintendent for Pupil Services.

Iris Metts, Superintendent of Prince George’s had glowing comments to offer about Dr. Green. "I know she will make an excellent Superintendent," she said. "She is a goal-oriented leader who knows how to build consensus."

Dr. Green has expressed her excitement about being a part of the North Allegheny School District, "I have a personal passion for education and for excellence. That is the reason why I was drawn so strongly to North Allegheny, where education and excellence clearly merge together as priorities that demonstrate themselves through a multi-faceted tradition of accomplishment. It is apparent to me that this is a premier School District and I look forward with great anticipation to the opportunity to be a part of its present and future in the position of Superintendent of Schools."

Dr. Green has demonstrated success on a national, state, and local level in the areas of instructional leadership, administrative and organizational management, instructional improvement, and social and emotional development.

Born and raised in New York City, Dr. Green moved to Maryland where she graduated from the University of Maryland in 1971 with a B. S. degree in elementary education: received her M. Ed. from the University of Maryland’s Institute of Child Study in 1977 in Human Development Education; and, received her Ph.D. in educational administration from the University of Maryland’s Department of Education Policy, Planning, and Administration. She has been with the Prince George’s County Public Schools, a district of l34,000 students in Maryland, since 1971 and has held the positions of Classroom Teacher, Elementary Instructional Administrative Specialist, Principal, Area Assistant Superintendent, Associate Superintendent for Pupil Services, and Acting Deputy Superintendent for Instruction, the position she currently holds.

Dr. Green’s accomplishments in educational reform over the years have been honored by the President of the United States, the U. S Department of Education, the Maryland State Board of Education, the Maryland State Department of Education, the National Association of Elementary School Principals, the Maryland Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development, the Prince George’s County Human Relations Commission, the Prince George’s County Chamber of Commerce, and the Prince George’s County Public Schools. Dr. Green has been included in Who’s Who In America; Who’s Who in the World; and, Who’s Who of American Women because of her contributions to education at the national level. Dr. Green has also been included in the book, Women of Achievement in Prince George’s County History. Dr. Green has been awarded the Distinguished Research Award from the Maryland Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development for her research on the nature of the Principalship. While Principal, her school, Columbia Park, became the first school in the history of Prince George’s County to win the National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence Award from the U.S. Department of Education, and was named one of the ten best schools in America by Child magazine.

Dr. Green has been featured in numerous publications, including Within Our Reach: Breaking the Cycle of Disadvantage by Lizbeth Schoor; Smart Schools/Smart Kids: Why Do Some Schools Work? by Edward Fiske; and, Focus in Change from the National Center of Effective Schools. She has been featured in the PBS documentary, Learning in America: Schools that Work with Roger Mudd; the World News Tonight in a feature with Dianne Sawyer, the Today Show, and numerous local television appearances on education-related issues. Dr. Green was invited by the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services and the U.S. Department of Education to participate in the development of the groundbreaking guidebook, Together We Can, which spelled out how school systems can forge interagency partnerships.

Award-winning and innovative programs that emphasize social and emotional learning have been development and implemented within Prince George’s County Public Schools during her tenure as Associate Superintendent. Several of these programs have been expanded for replication across the State of Maryland and have been recognized by the Maryland State Attorney General with Spotlight on Schools citations for excellence.

Dr. Green has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Prince George’s County Communities in Schools, Inc., as well as being a member of the Prince George’s County Local Management Board.  Dr. Green has been married for 26 years to Dr. Stephen I. Green, a periodontist.
