2008 JROTC President's Academic
Championship
Submitted by: MSgt. Richard Denault and Maj. Frederick Schott
The President’s Academic
Championship is a nationally recognized academic competition exclusively for
JROTC students. It was created to highlight the demanding high school
curriculum in the JROTC program and to provide a challenging academic
competition. By participating, cadets learn the values of citizenship,
academic competition, and college opportunity. The competition creates
tremendous opportunities for JROTC and its cadets by demonstrating the
academic abilities of JROTC students.
The competition, sponsored by College Options Foundation and produced by
nationally-recognized software and question development experts, has three
levels of competition that are increasingly more difficult. Each level
includes questions from JROTC curriculum; standardized tests such as SAT,
ACT and ASVAB; and current events. National winners receive team plaques,
college admissions software, savings bonds worth hundreds of dollars, and
the satisfaction of knowing that they competed against hundreds of students
and proved their academic abilities.
A
team of North Allegheny Senior High School JROTC students competed against
teams from schools nationwide and achieved Second Place.

2008 National Achievement
Scholarship Program
The National Achievement®
Scholarship Program is an academic scholarship competition for Black
American high school students. The program was initiated in 1964 to honor
academically-able black youth throughout the nation and provide scholarships

Corporation, a not-for-profit organization that operates without government
assistance.
More than 140,000 black
students in 11,000 high schools took the 2007 PSAT/NMSQT and requested
consideration in the 2008 National Achievement Program. Approximately 4,600
entrants earned test scores high enough to qualify for National Achievement
Program recognition. Their scores place them in the top 5% of program
participants. North Allegheny senior Aisha Moore was named a finalist

Intel Science Talent Search 2008
Submitted by: Ms. Anne Marklewicz and Mr. Matthew Davis
The
Intel Science Talent Search is American’s oldest and most prestigious
science research competition for high school seniors. Since 1942, first in
partnership with Westinghouse and since 1998 with Intel, the competition has
provided a national stage for America’s best and brightest young scientists.
This year, 1,602 high school
seniors entered the national competition. Three hundred students were
selected as semifinalists. Only 40 students were selected to advance to the
finalist level and NA senior Clifford Kim was one of them.
Cliff
traveled to Washington, D.C., in March to compete at a week-long Science
Talent Institute. There he had the opportunity to present his research
projects to the general public and members of the scientific community. At
the National Academy of Sciences, he met with distinguished government
leaders and participated in a rigorous judging process.
Cliff
did not come home as the grand prize winner, but making it to the finalist
level placed him in an elite group. Cliff was awarded $1,000 by Intel, won
at least $5,000 in scholarships and received a new laptop. He met Dudley R.
Herschbach, winner of the 1986 Nobel Prize for Chemistry, participated in a
photo shoot with the President, and met with U.S. Senator Bob Casey.

Key Club International State
Convention
Submitted by: Ms. Barbara Schmid
Key Club is a service
organization for high school students, which operates under school
regulations and draws its members from the student body. Key Clubs are
sponsored by a local Kiwanis Club, members of which are leading business and
professional people of the community. Key Club’s objective is the
development of initiative, leadership ability, and good citizenship
practices. It functions not only on a local level, but on a district and
international level as well. Key Club is the oldest and largest service
program for high school students. It is a student-led organization that
teaches leadership through serving others. Key Clubs exist on more than
5,000 high school campuses primarily in the United States and Canada.
Growth efforts have taken the Key Club experience internationally to Canada,
the Caribbean nations, Central and South America, and most recently to Asia
and Australia.
The NAI Key Club has 175
members and the NASH Key Club has 150 members. Already this year, the two
clubs have raised more than $14,000 for Key Club charities by performing
more than 50 service projects requiring more than 3,000 service hours. In
addition to club service hours, each club member must perform a minimum of
50 individual service hours, which will bring the total service hours for
these two clubs to over 20,000 by the end of this school year.
At this year’s state
convention, five NAI Key Club members were honored with the Distinguished
Officer Award. The NASH Key Club was recognized for recruiting 93 new
members and NASH student Andy Fishell was elected Governor of the
Pennsylvania Key Club District. In addition, Ms. Barbara Schmid, NAI’s Key

Tim & Tom Gullikson Foundation
The Tim & Tom Gullikson Foundation is
inspired by Tim Gullikson, a former Association of Tennis Players Tour
Champion and coach of such notable players as Martina Navratilova and Pete
Sampras. While coaching Sampras, Tim was diagnosed with brain tumors. As a
world-class tennis competitor and coach, Tim was convinced that the lessons
and principles he learned both on and off the court would be helpful in
enhancing the quality of life for brain tumor patients and their families.
On that hopeful premise, Tim and his twin brother, Tom, formed the Tim & Tom
Gullikson Foundation in 1995. Tim's spirit and vision guide the Foundation
today to create and support programs that build a brighter today and
tomorrow for patients and families living with brain tumors.
After Tim’s death in 1996, the Foundation created the Tim Gullikson Spirit
Award to
honor the memory of Tim Gullikson. The selected recipient of the Award is a
brain tumor patient, caregiver, volunteer, corporation or benefactor, that
embraces the same fighting spirit and positive attitude that Tim Gullikson
used to battle - and to live with - brain tumors, and in doing so, has given
hope to others. The award recognizes someone who has shown extraordinary
and unique courage, resourcefulness or ingenuity in battling the disease, or
a person who shows an extraordinary effort to help fulfill the goals of the
Foundation to assist brain tumor patients and their families as they cope
with the illness.
This recipient of the 2007
Tim Gullikson Spirit Award was NA senior Will Judkis. Will survived his own
battle with brain cancer when he was a child and in 2007, he founded a
tennis clinic to benefit the Gullikson Foundation. The second annual
clinic, which has earned the recognition of the United States Tennis
Association, was held on May 17, 2008.

Association of Supervision and
Curriculum Development
Annual Conference and Exhibit Show
Founded
in 1943, the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development is a
nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that represents more than 175,000
educators from 119 countries. Their membership spans the entire profession
of educators—superintendents, supervisors, principals, teachers, professors
of education, and school board members. The organization addresses all
aspects of effective teaching and learning—such as professional development,
educational leadership, and capacity building. They offer broad, multiple
perspectives—across all education professions—in reporting key policies and
practices. Their mission is to advocate sound policies and share best
practices to achieve the success of each learner.
The
Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development invited our
Superintendent, our School Board President and Ms. Barbara Hutchinson,
President of the North Allegheny Federation of Teachers, to present at their
63rd Annual Conference and Exhibit Show which was held last month
in Louisiana. The session called Gateway to Excellence: A Teacher
Union-Administration-School Board Partnership focused on the
highly successful labor-management collaborative relationship that has
resulted in significantly high student achievement for the North Allegheny
School District. The session introduced the plan of action that has
cultivated leadership and attracted, sustained, and expanded a high-quality
workforce while emphasizing excellence and high expectations across our
School District. Their presentation demonstrated that through this
collaboration, the District has achieved outstanding scores on state and
national assessments such as the SAT, AP and NCLB tests.
